Many of you have been asking us, in a friendly way, what's going on with us these days. Since you asked...
Hey Ocean is still recording their album in Tom's studio (www.verticalstudios.ca) so Tom has been spending his on-time assisting their producer and his off-time jogging and stir-frying organic vegetables. He's been on a very impressive health kick of late. I never really know what Peter and Miles do, day to day. Peter spends a lot of time practising bass and swearing at himself, I know that. Miles lies in the sun like a cat and daydreams about the fairer sex. As for me, as usual, all I've been thinking about lately has been writing songs. It seems like every day I get an idea that fits into an incomplete song or calls for me to write a new one. The personal exercise for me is, can I write happy songs that I still respect the next morning? I've written a few, but it's rare. I've been pretty happy lately, so that should lead to happy songs, right? Actually no, it leads to me playing sports and going to watch movies and sunsets and staying out late with friends. Its hard to sit still when you're excited about the day ahead, you know? Fuck it. I'm just going to write a song about clubbing and about ladies looking fine.

Tom and I are getting to the part of songwriting that I like a lot when it becomes like building a castle out of lego. You think about structure and you think about colour, but the pieces are already there. Half of these new songs are going to be catchy and dead simple and some of them I can tell are going to take on lives of their own, shepherding us to new pastures of creativity/self-indulgent wankery. Kind of the way "run away persephone" became its own thing-- not that they'll necessarily sound like that either.

We played a show at a high school in Vancouver last night for a charity fundraiser called Free The Children. It was a riot. The girls in charge organized the hell out of it. They booked us and Bedouin Soundclash (who everyone just ate up) to play and somehow put together a seamless evening of song and screaming.  And philanthropy.  Probably the most spirited crowd we've ever played for, too. Thanks girls. All y'all Vancouver minors lets do it again. Come see us on the 24th.

Sorry for being unentertaining for much of this blog.
Love you guys,

-Zach
