ABC TURNS PROGRAMMING OVER TO OBAMA; NEWS TO BE ANCHORED FROM INSIDE WHITE HOUSE
Tue Jun 16 2009 08:45:10 ET

On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care -- a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!

Highlights on the agenda:

ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.

The network plans a primetime special -- 'Prescription for America' -- originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.

The Director of Communications at the White House Office of Health Reform is Linda Douglass, who worked as a reporter for ABC News from 1998-2006.

Late Monday night, Republican National Committee Chief of Staff Ken McKay fired off a complaint to the head of ABCNEWS:

Dear Mr. Westin:

As the national debate on health care reform intensifies, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with ABC's astonishing decision to exclude opposing voices on this critical issue on June 24, 2009. Next Wednesday, ABC News will air a primetime health care reform “town hall” at the White House with President Barack Obama. In addition, according to an ABC News report, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, WORLD NEWS, NIGHTLINE and ABC’s web news “will all feature special programming on the president’s health care agenda.” This does not include the promotion, over the next 9 days, the president’s health care agenda will receive on ABC News programming.

Today, the Republican National Committee requested an opportunity to add our Party's views to those of the President's to ensure that all sides of the health care reform debate are presented. Our request was rejected. I believe that the President should have the ability to speak directly to the America people. However, I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party's opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers.

In the absence of opposition, I am concerned this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda. If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers. President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.

Respectfully,
Ken McKay
Republican National Committee
Chief of Staff

MORE

ABCNEWS Senior Vice President Kerry Smith on Tuesday responded to the RNC complaint, saying it contained 'false premises':

"ABCNEWS prides itself on covering all sides of important issues and asking direct questions of all newsmakers -- of all political persuasions -- even when others have taken a more partisan approach and even in the face of criticism from extremes on both ends of the political spectrum. ABCNEWS is looking for the most thoughtful and diverse voices on this issue.

"ABCNEWS alone will select those who will be in the audience asking questions of the president. Like any programs we broadcast, ABC News will have complete editorial control. To suggest otherwise is quite unfair to both our journalists and our audience."

Kind of an ignorant statement. Anyone who wants to see this country make a turn for the better knows that healthy debate is where problems get solved. This deal with ABC offers no healthy debate at all. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Even if Bush did this, it would be wrong.
Their calling this "News"? It's a one-sided infomercial, and they will attempt to literally brainwash anyone watching it. If the Obama Administration could, I'm sure they would force cable providers to trigger all boxes to that network.
This is the beginnings of a potentially scary time in our country. Socialism is showing its ugly head, and there is no doubt about that now.

What does it matter if it is Bush or Obama! It is about the right to state views from all political parties in a political debate. Just because we have a democrat as a president does not mean that us republicans should be over looked. In the end we are all Americans with different views, but we are still the same, we are Americans. I Hope one day that everyone can meet in the middle about the path of our country and government, But that will happen when hell freezes over!

It's nice to see musicians, like yourself, who have a little common sense when it comes to real world issues.
It seems that everyone in the spotlight, including Obama, wants to appear to the masses that they are changing the world. When, in fact, they are neglected the problems they face on a local and national basis.
Keep it up, and keep on making noise.
We're still listening to your shit up here in Central Pennsylvania, and we love ya brother.

and it doesn't matter that there are members of the audience asking questions because if they really wanted to they can be cut because of the 30 second delay on "live" tv.

You're kinda jumping the gun here mike.

This hasn't aired, and you don't know what other viewpoints ABC will present.

And no one said anything about Bush, that's the problem. Where was your criticism of him when you were cheerleading that ridiculous war?

You're better than reposting weak Drudge headlines, Mr. Graves.

Never too soon to jump the gun. Should he wait until AFTER the infomercial to pay attention? It'll be too late then!

If anybody does not see some real trouble brewing with the current incarnation of Congress (including Nancy "I don't have to prove anything" Pelosi) in tandem with the veiled intent of the President, they are not paying attention, plain and simple.

We miss you in the southeast, Michale!

These politicians don't care about us. Any of them, be they Republican OR Democrat.
Term limitations need to be set for Senators and House Reps. Career politicians are what is destroying the integrity of this country.
Obama is no different, and offers nothing different other than punishing those who have succeeded, and preventing those who wish to.
People with financial problems, or "The Lower Class", do need help. And we should help them, but why does it have to be with government intervention. What is it that our government has done that makes you think they should be manufacturing cars, or running healthcare.

I believe the point some are trying to make is that Michale has been public about his political views which have often reflected the Bush view of the world...Therefore it is easy for people to make the assumption that he like many others on the Bush side of political philosophy would cry foul merely due to sour grapes over the Republicans losing control of the government....Not to say that this is Michale's perspective, however it is INDICATIVE of the right wing's view of Mr Obama and our countries current political power struggle. I personally feel that these issues should be kept private by Michale as they have a polarizing effect and are a turn off to fans with opposing views...however, he is free to express himself as he sees fit....as long as he knows that he is alienating his core group of fans as most old school punks and Misfits fans certainly do not fall into the republican, bigoted, sexist, homophobic, Christian paradigm as reflected by aspects of Michales own political and social views....to each his own..but with each move further to the right and away from his core base Michale heads..the further I get from listening to his music anymore...I want a FIEND...not my father!

First of all w. Is no longer an issue so might as well just forget him and the scandles that came with and from his terms . Its over ! From what i see people are not really concerned about what republicans think at the moment , every one blames a whole party for what a couple of people did . Yes i admit i dont agree with many republicans but they should have an opinion ? Yes ! But again opinions are just as assholes every body has one ! I personally think republicans should sit back on this one and see where obama is going with this before everyone starts going insane and start cutting throats ! Democrats esentially want to heal the nation , after seeing what we been through these eight years we need to heal . I think not to do so would bring a sort of self destrution that we do not need . Im sure people feel as if the "system" has failed us but im sure it has not , the system is hurt and strained , i feel it should be revamped and reinvented . You cant have the republicans without the demacrats , if they

I see if the government wants to give us health care, I could see one of the requirements involving being chipped. There would be nothing like having a GPS put inside of you to follow your every move. I think it's just a way to invade the peoples privacy even more. So far they've taken over banks and car companies. To me, it sounds like the NWO are taking over. It's almost as if we are a Nazi-America where the government takes complete control of our lives and we are forced to abid by there laws and structures in business.

health care needs to be in government control...pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and hospitals are all just feeding money to big businesses. its depressing, that our country is one of the only ones without universal health care, while a poor poverty stricken country like cuba can afford to provide their citizens with free health care.

ummm... define "free". It's paid for with massive taxes levied against the common people who are supposed to be protected by this system. I can tell you saw Sicko... you might want to look into the fact that Cuba has a two tier health care system. One for the common folk which sucks, and the good one for Castro's elites that you saw in your "documentary". Every country that has this system is trying to get rid of it and the people who have the money switch to a private provider.

I hope no one becomes confused here and thinks this is socialism or anything. Socialism is not obama.  People think socialism and communism is big goverment and dictatorship. This is not the case. I'm glad this topic has been brought up and this is outragous that something like this would happen. I always support two sides to arguements and this clearly is one sided.

Just my two cents

Personally, I think that it is more frightening that the media and the government are so eager to unite.  Though, I think we all know that it IS really one in the same (despite partisanship most the time) I think that it's really scary how much control we've allowed them to have over time.  Eventually it won't matter what we think, or what the truth is.  They tell us what they want to, so we think what they want us to.  Even the ones that oppose the corporate run government that makes decisions for big business (not for it's people) still have to come to their own half cocked decisions.  When we let them get away with this kind of stuff- all we do is relinquish even MORE of our rights.  Soon, we may have no more left.  Regardless of partisanship.  The government is ran by lobbyists, so I bet that the health care shit that going to be talked about is somehow going to mean more $ for the insurance, and phamisucidal companies...
We'll see.  Either way, I do LOVE your passion (even if it differs from mine time to time) and your music.  Music should be a platform to discuss events that we feel strongly about.  I am thankful for artists that aren't afraid to do that.
Peace.

I love crackpots asking why we didn't complain about Bush - WE DID! You just didn't hear it because you were too busy calling him Hitler, instead of using actual facts or points. Just like the fact that Obama makes Bush look like a genius. I never thought Bush was too smart, but stand him next to Obama and he is like a rocket scientist. We had to hear for eight years that Bush is a facist dictator, yet he hasn't done ANY of what Che' Obama has done in the last few months to undermine our constitution and our people. Taking over car companies, banks, media outlets, etc. This is not left-wing paranoia, these are facts. And not a peep out of the sheeple as he leads us into a world where we will yearn for the "good old days" of Jimmy Carter. The last election was won by a bagman from CROOK county, elected by uninformed children that were promised the treasury to make up for their parents lack of teaching self preservation and self reliance. And "Negative, John Doe" is the perfect example of "Bush Deraingement Syndrome".

You know, I don't understand why socialized medicine is not good.  Europe has advanced by introducing different forms of socialized medicine, and it works.  Some may argue that "The United States Population is too much."  Take Germany for example; This country is the size of Montana, with a population of over 82 million crammed inside.  They are much more "conservative" than most of us Americans, but they could never imagine paying out of pocket for health insurance, unless they willingly choose to have private insurance, nor do they pay for "University" for that matter.  What is so wrong with being progressive?  If we are so much better off with private insurance companies, how come We have a lower life expectancy than other advanced nations, a higher infant mortality, and our overall health sucks?

What happened to "United we stand, divided we fall"?  Chavez gets it...
