...to what you think will be bulldozed in Newark, DE, and when.

Okay guys, haven’t posted a new blog in quite a while...but, come on dude, I’ve been focused on Glory Days at Delaware, as you know!  (And again, if any of you can help spread the word, it’s of course most appreciated...cuz, ya’ know, I’ve been banned from The UD Messenger!)

Anyway, I haven’t been down to Newark, DE since December, and understand that there’s been a lot of bulldozing on Elkton Road...there’s a push to redevelop it in the same way Main Street was in the late ’90s. I believe The Crab Trap, Grainery Shops, and Friendly’s are all already gone (I snapped pics of all of those back in 2006.)

As far as campus buildings go, well, there’s strong indications that some of the dorms are in UD’s crosshairs.

And thusly, feel free to post your odds of what you think will be gone and by when; either on or off campus. And you what? Feel free to post any predictions of changes that will occur in general at UD; policies, etc.

A few of mine:

1) Rodney, 3-1 in favor it’ll be gone by 2011, and will be replaced by Rodney V2.

2) Ditto on Dickinson, but by 2013. (I’ll be one sad old alumni if / when this happens, but will understand.)

3) 10,000-1 in favor that if I visit UD sometime this spring, I’ll walk into Kate’s, and tell every college girl in there that I’m only 23.

Post away!

I was the manager of Wonderland Records in 1994. That place was falling apart when I started there in 1989. I gotta tell you- it was the best place that I have ever worked. I loved that job even though parts of the ceiling would fall on me every time the train passed.

There are stories to that place... MANY stories...

I used to think that Skid Row was in their cross-hairs, but apparently it's protected because they're historic.

Like, literally. They're "historical tenements" or something like that. Thank god for that. You just know it kills the administration that there's really nothing they can do to get rid of Skid Fest.

1. Rodney. Definitely. I've been there. There's no way in hell parents aren't already complaining about these dorms.

2. Dickinson. Agreed.

3. The car factory kinda across from Bob Carpentar Center. Gone by 2015. To be replaced by UD's brand-new stadium in 2017 or 2018.

4. Newark Cinema. Not that this will be replaced by something UD, but apparently Mayor Funk wants to turn Newark Shopping Center into something more upscale. Good luck with that.

5. The whole damn Kirkbride Complex. Please. Hopefully that eyesore will be gone by 2020. Ditto for those really ugly buildings from the 70's that are across from Trabant.

6. I hate to say this, but the Towers by 2019. I've heard rumours that they want to demolish them and put more modern dorms there.

7. Rumor has it, Harker wants to close off Academy Street and turn it into another green. Can't really bet on this because I don't know how the hell he's gonna pull that off.

Alright, bringing this back up again because President Harker has released his "master plan" to bring University of Delaware into the top echelons of public universities, such as UVA.

PRESIDENT HARKER'S plans are:

• Creating a more flexible transfer policy for students wanting to change or combine majors

• Increasing financial aid for students to study abroad or engage in research and service learning

• Strengthening the honors program to attract more high achievers

• Creating faculty chairs in the areas of energy, environment and health sciences.

• Creating a UD Legal Institute to increase faculty expertise and explore creating a law school

• Opening a student business incubator within the Lerner College of Business and Economics

• Studying the feasibility of building a new student center on the Newark campus

• Studying the feasibility of opening a small "liberal arts-..style.." college in Sussex County

****

So, what do you guys think?

I really like the idea of them building a new student center. They should put one on Laird Campus, especially considering how many students are living there now with all the new dorms.

I also like the idea of putting in a small liberal arts college in Sussex County...they could use one. They should call it "Southern Delaware College".

They're tearing down the Korner Diner, for another fucking apartment building.

I'm so pissed. They closed last month, and I'm counting the days until I walk by and Korner Diner is just another hole in the ground.

I had so many great memories there, sobering up after a night of fun over plates of cheap food, while listening to cheesy music played over the jukebox.

R.I.P. Korner Diner.

It's official...
"In addition, the Trustees also gave the go-ahead for the demolition of the Gilbert residence hall complex, located on Wyoming Road near the Perkins Student Center. The complex was built in 1965."

So Gilbert is going to be gone.
