Cartoonists Day began in 1990 or '91, at the suggestion of Ken Alvine. May 5 was chosen because it was the anniversary of the first color appearance of Richard Outcault's Down Hogan's Alley (though the yet-unnamed Yellow Kid actually wore blue on that day) in 1895. For awhile, many NCS members acknowledged it by putting the logo in their strips or panels. These days, I think only Bill Amend still does it. And I like to send out e-cards every year.
