Current mood:  lonely
hi guys,
just a quick note to let you know tix are on sale for the northcote social club shows in May... please, please, please go buy one. i'm really looking forward to these shows, they'll be great. the next single from postcards will be 'one last chance to reach you'... we'll be giving away copies at the nsc shows and we'll post the song here shortly... hope you like it! I've been trying to write lately, but it's weird... feels like the well is dry... and it's weird cos I've been totally miserable and that's usually when I write the most... there's a few new songs around like 'everything after you', 'bodies', 'ambulance'... but they're as upbeat as they sound and suck. how do you write happy songs? really wish I could write a happy song for once... anyway... I ramble. hope to see you at the espy tomorrow night... hopefully I'll see myself there too..
juan x.

hey juan

i think we should write that cheery pop tune together. I have a hook for a chorus, it kinda goes 'Mmm bop, ba duba dop, Ba du bop, ba duba dop, Ba du bop, ba duba dop, Ba du.
'

We'll need to find a tiny 6 year old drummer for it.

I think it will take us to the top.

Looking forward to the NSC show with you.

hahaha... yeah cool, sounds like a winner... as long as we can get some kind of thinly veiled suicide reference in there? i'm pretty sure that's what that song was about. looking forward to meeting you guys at nsc... juan x.

Just because your songs aren't about "happy" things doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with them or that they suck. In my opinion the absence of trite, oversimplified lyrics and perky but banal melodies is a definite plus.

Your music influences me in ways that I’m inept to describe adequately and I’ve not found any other composers who can produce the experience I get when listening to an Epicure CD. It has that special double edged nature that makes it exactly what I feel the need to listen to when I’m both up and down; that can help me make it through an abysmal day (or week, or month) or heighten my enjoyment of a good one.

You might not write happy songs Juan, but you do write songs that make other people happy. And I’m really grateful for that.

I hope to hear the new, and not so new, material live soon; whether it be that you guys make the trek over to Adelaide some time (feel free to read that as a massive hint) or that I make it to one of the Melbourne shows.

I find happy songs really hard to write too..
They always sound cheesy and crap and totally without meaning.

It's strange.. but true.

I like your way of writing because you always add that element of hope, and I think that makes people happier than any 'happy' song could.

I really wanna get to your shows.. I will see if I am working and stuff and then yeah, buy a ticket.

Hopefully I'll see you there.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to perform my own songs again.

I used to be in a band but that ended kinda badly. ha ha. Long story.

Now I sing in a cover band called Black Cat. We play at Portico once a month.

It's a lot of fun, but yeah. There's nothing like singing your own lyrics.

ha ha. I will say hi. She loves you guys.

hahhaha oh dear, a Hanson reference! But seriously if you want some happy (or even sad) song inspiration check out Hansons newest album "the walk". And yes they are still around......

And Juan try not to be so hard on yourself. Your music is amazing and this dry patch will end.
I just know it :-)

Hey Juan,

my luck hey...you online and I missed the opportunity to tell you...I actually asked you at the Erina NSW gig 'when are you going to write a happy song', after leaving that night ( you guys rocked) it dawned on me that it isnt about happy or sad, its about how you are stirred by every aspect of the song...music, voice, lyrics,tempo,....how it makes you feel and what it inspires in the listeners soul,... some of your saddest songs make me feel very happy. Anyway, I ramble...hope you havin great gig tonight. Mez x PS ..and your angry songs empower me...mmm,hope you got what i meant.

hey juan, maybe it's baby steps, go for melancholy on the road to happy. For me happy songs have to be about the simple things... They're harder to write maybe because we have so many more words for negative situations. Try an open D tuning on the guitar, sometimes that works for me :) hope to see you in nsw soon.

you may have some trouble finding "the walk" in stores as it was never released in Australia. Although the album before that "underneath" is also amazing and you may find it at a jb. Otherwise downloading is fun ;-) You may be pleasantly surprised by what they sound like.... or at least i hope.

I was trying to figure out the steps you could take though between melancholy and happy... Guilty of overthinking here :)
Maybe some more travel - most of my happy songs are about that... As for open D, both DADF#AD and DADDAD can work nicely...

take care, and say hi to TQ for me when you see him next, it's been ages!

I gotta admit i really like writing the Happy Rock song, The POP song that has a catchy chorus and that hook that gets stuck in your head. It's even better when you fill that catchy pop song with mega sad lyrics about heartache and lost love that really kicks your listener in the head. Ha Ha! Suckers! Its not a happy song at all! HA Ha ha!

As for tonight at the NSC. We'll be there... 2 good reasons too. Some band called Epicure are playing and i get me a Parma!!! Whoo!

Much love to your Tunes.
Earl.
