Who Gives Kudos:

Tuesday, December 09, 2008
So, I've been wanting to write something for a while now explaining why I am leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of the year. Not that it's THAT big of a deal or important compared to other real shit going on out there in the world but I figured I'd take a minute out to explain anyhow. I know a few people are aware that I'm having my 3rd child in January and basically....that about SUMS IT UP!

I've just been gone too damn much lately and if I hadn't spent so much time on the road in recent years (between NIN, A Perfect Circle, Devo, Sting, The Vandals) coupled with having 3 kids (come January) then I'd still be out on the road in the new year. It's just that the rate that NIN has been touring (and will continue to tour in 2009) is something that I can't keep up with right now. My kids need their Dad around and I want to be around for them. I am definitely not retiring or "done touring" by any means though. I just need to be home a bit more next year.
I am not leaving because I got a better offer from another band or because I don't enjoy it.....it's one of my favorite situations I've ever been involved with and I already miss it (though we still have 5 more shows to play).

If you saw a NIN show in the past 3 years then you'll know that to say I LIKE playing up there is an understatement and that I give it my all every night. It's much more than a "job" or a "gig" for me. I'm a big believer in Trent and his music and feel fortunate and privileged to have had the chance to work along side of him and be a part of what he does for the past three years. It is something I am truly proud of and he makes most the other ones out there feel pretty small time. I have faith in the notion that we'll work together again at some point, in some fashion. But for now I need to go teach my 7 year old boy how to ride a bike.....nothing can really compare to that (except maybe an all night hotel coke session with some hookers.)

its great that you wanna stay with your kids. really. i appreciate. sometimes i think there actually are some things more important than nine inch nails (just a few, admittedly) and taking care of your children and being with your wife is definetely one of them. great job, josh.

As a fellow dad who used to travel a ton, I hear ya and applaud the decision. You won't regret it, your work is obviously respected and you know there's always time to do it again, young'un. But your kids' tender ages you don't get back. Bravo.

His birthday is in December, his 2nd kid's is in December, and the upcoming one is in January. Does it coincide with Spring Fever in LA, or with his breaks from touring. If you have one around Christmas, you should pretty much be guarantied you'll be there for it's birthday, so good timing I guess. That leaves the Afro count at 2 with, and 3 without. If Jeordie were to return, it might be 3 against 2, as he's been seen sporting an Afro back in the old days.
I still want you for my Sugar Daddy though Josh, have fun being a house husband

Aww, thank you for this and your music and of course...Congratulations!! I'm happy you're welcoming another life into your family, YAY! :D I've had the pleasure of seeing you master the drums with Sting and Trent, and I must say (in my humble opinion) that you are righteously one of the greatest musicians, and your youtube videos are superb Sir.
;)
Positive waves flowing your way.

Rock the peace out,

It's apparent that your leaving Nine Inch Nails is not only a huge loss to the NIN camp but also to us fans. It has been such a pleasure to see you play these songs. Without a doubt, this "band" has never sounded stronger. I am sad to see this coming to an end! I'd go as far as to say I am being weird about it. haha I am, however, very excited for you and your family.
I hope you all make the most of your time together!

See you in Vegas to say a proper goodbye.

That is completely understandable and I applaud you for being an awesome dad and a great husband, as I'm sure your wife could use the help! I saw you guys in Philadelphia a couple months ago and was meaning to let you and the rest of NIN that the feeling of the show was phenomenal!!!! Best show I have been at up to date, and I have seen some of amazing acts the last few years.
The set and lights were fucking perfect! When you're ready to play for us again, I sure you'll rock the house just like always;)

Excellent reasons, bro. Being a dad is a big responsibility, and one that is truly important in the face of most other things. I saw you and the rest of the NIN crew in Greensboro, NC on the 3rd of Nov. And I will definitely attest to the fact that you gave it your all then, as you have and continue to do so. Great work, and I really hope to see/hear you collaborate with Trent again in the future; you two are a force to be reckoned with.

Musician's wife here -- telling you you're doing the right thing and I really admire you for doing it. Forward thinking, do you want to be a slave to the road? Maybe think about developing other passions (scoring, writing, and such) that you can do at home and which will balance your drive to work with your love and responsibility to your family - then, tour only when you really want to and with whom you want. Best of luck to you Josh, although you don't need it; you're making you're own good fortune. God bless.

Well a lot of us imagined that this was the case. Even yesterday in the Nine Inch Nails chatroom Justin Meldal-Johnsen was saying about how constantly being on tour is putting a strain on things with his daughter, so it's understandable that you'd want to take time off since you're... you know, actually having a baby, which requires your full attention.

You should've posted this a lot sooner though! Fans seem to have got it into their heads that you had a fight with Trent/you're gone from NIN forever/you wanted to go solo/this is the end of NIN etc. Although there were a bunch of us who explained that it was probably just related to the baby, there were still people out their being melodramatic, as usual. So it's good to hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

Anyway I'm waffling now, so I should just shut up.

I wish you the best of luck with the new little 'un and with the two you've already got - they're going to enjoy the hell out of having their dad around full-time.

As a drummer (29 years and going of touring/session etc...) and a Father myself I totally understand your decision. The choice I made a couple years ago to primarily teach from my home studio 5 nights a week was one of the best I've ever made. I get to stay home with my 3 year old daughter (daytime) and walk a about 12 steps down to teach in the evening.
Awesome!!! Great choice Josh!!!

Well M. Freese, you don't need me to tell you how wonderful a drummer you are! But I say it anyway...You were really great in Montreal and I was fortunate to see you play with my favourite band twice. You have very good reasons leaving touring with NIN and I respect your decision as much as I respect your work. So yeah, I guess what I want to say is, as a fellow (young) musician and lover, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you put your heart into.
