Man last night was a KICK ASS show!!!! my electronic heroes, MBM, played at the El Rey. I really like the sound and size of the El Rey...and the vibe of the mid-wilshire folks is very cool.
They played some of my old favorites like "Helter Skelter" from albums like "Satyricon" and "99%". Even though the whole "geeky guys with laptops and projectors" thing has been so done at this point, and a lot of these kinds of shows can be boring, they were the originators... with a real drummer onstage and Jack Dangers occasionally singing/rapping, and the huge arsenal of tripped out vintage film clips they amassed over the decades...there was plenty of eye candy and the crowd as jumping up and down. I brought a friend who had not heard of MBM and was definitely won over by their fusion of techno, dub, industrial and breaks. The show ended with a crazy montage of live drumming fused with wickedly inserted breaks and loops and video clips of famous drummers (including Animal) on the screens--definitely had the fans in a frenzy!
