I have been trying to follow the run up to the Presidential election season, which has become quite a spectacle in and of itself. The first primary isn't until the beginning of next year, and yet there is already rampant coverage of who is going to be the next president, let alone who will make it through the early primaries. National poles mean nothing when it comes to choosing the parties candidates for president. When you think about it, the primaries are the only time that the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and even the District of Columbia have the chance to effect who may or may not become the "leader of the free world."
Now, I am unsure if any politician can truly help this country. It seems as though a response such as that, a crafted politician's response if there ever was one, is not what I anted to hear. I wanted to hear that every vote matters. That no matter when the primary is held, January, February, or heck, even tomorrow, the votes of the people of the state of Florida will be counted and will make a difference.
I hope that the politics as usual stance of the DNC, as well as the little no nothing staffer who sent out that email response, are replaced by a sense of hope for the future and a renewed sense of patriotism. Of course, we could all just sit around "waiting for the world to change!"
As I have been following the presidential up and comers, I have found myself drawn to the policies and personality of Senator Barack Hussein Obama. Personally, I find Sen. Obama to be a reincarnation of Lincoln - a junior senator from the state of Illinois who will attempt to unify a nation divided not only by politics, but by religion, war, and economics.
For that reason, amongst others, I decided to make a small donation of $10 to the Obama campaign. It isn't much, I know, but it is a token of support that hopefully will bring his brand of politics to the forefront of the debate, and eventually to the White House.
Of course, if the DNC has it's way, my vote in the Florida Democratic Primary will not even count!
So, what is Senator Obama's position on the fact that the Democratic National Committee has stated that the delegates from Florida will not count? I strongly support Gov. Crist in his move to realign the Florida primary to a time where it actually matters. I have been a registered voter since I was 18 years old, and in the 13 years since, have never participated in a primary election. Florida is out of the loop in terms of choosing our candidates.
I feel that if the DNC does not want to have our votes count in the primary, they (and all the candidates) should return any money that was donated to support the primary fight.
It is only fair.
I submitted the italic section of this blog to the Obama campaign, and was given the following response.
Dear Adam,
Thank you for contacting Obama for America about the Democratic National
Committee's decision not to seat Florida's delegates to the 2008
Democratic National Convention.
Senator Obama had no role in the DNC's decision. Along with all of the
other candidates, he is abiding by that decision, but he still hopes
that this dispute can be settled in a way that allows every voter to be
heard in the nominating process. In the meantime, we will continue
building our movement for change across the country.
Thank you again for contacting us.
Sincerely,
Obama for America
