I know this will sound blasphemous to many football fans, but I'm starting to wonder of the NFL Playoff system is flawed.

I'mthinking that maybe there should be a 16-team playoff instead of theway it is now, with 12. Having 12 teams makes it more competitive atthe surface, but it really seems as if having a bye week in theplayoffs is more of a punishment than a reward. Bye teams lose everyyear to lesser squads who have a chance to build up momentum by stayingon the field in high pressure situations while the teams with the bestrecords have to sit on their hands for two weeks.

Witha 16-team format (you cant do 8 that just would not be fair at all), ateam like this year's Pats, at 11-5, could still make the playoffs, butas a 7 seed, behind the 8-8 Chargers and such. This at least would haveall the teams deserving of competing for a championship in the mix, andno one has to sit around and wait an extra week to play. It turns mystomach to see the Cards, who the Pats whooped 47-7, be one win awayfrom the Super Bowl while the clearly superior team has to watch.

TheCardinals are hosting the NFC title game against a team with a betterrecord I believe, because they won their division and thus have ahigher seeding. That's fine with me. The NBA does it the same way, andit makes sense. But to have a team's season end prematurely becauseanother team was king of a crappy division just doesn't seem right. There are only four teams in every division - why should there be areward for being the best of four bottom feeders (like the AFC WEST andNFC WEST)?

Eliminate the Wild Card and have a full playoffs that takes the same amount of time to finish!

11-5 and sitting? come on.. well, it only happens once every thirty years, right?

A valid point Ak. You got to admit though, cats are going to consider it biased cuz it happen to the Pats. Would the same issue have been raised had it happened to the Colts, perhaps? I feel you though cuz that would mean more ffotball games and that's never a bad thing. Peace.

Unfortunately it happened to the Pats so it looks like a bias.. But no.. And, arent the Steelers the ONLY bye team that won this year? And how many #1 seeds have won the Super Bowl in the last decade?

Not that they should, Im just saying that having a bye while other teams play might help during the regular season, but it's an absolute momentum killer for the playoffs.

Had any team besides the Pats gone 11-5, I would have made a similar post to this one.

Unless it was the Giants or Colts, of course :)

i hear you on changing the system...
but its football! its not going to take away the element of better teams getting knocked out early...
for example.. the patriots could play the arizona the week after they beat them, and lost.

and the division ranking does seem unfair when you see a team like arizona.. and compare them to teams like patriots,,
but in football.. that means ALOT.. that ads a huge element..
when eagles play the giants....
or when bears play green bay...
if they took away the division ranking it would take away that crazy division battle that is going on all year during the season..that element ads alot to it for the fans.

.
the system is designed so that the best teams (record wise) are represented from each division. its a division battle. and that makes it deeper.. and alot more intresting.. because really the playoffs really start in like the 5th week.. its just not offical.

the best in the division earn the rite to represent that divison.... the wild card shit pisses people off every year..somebody is going to be pissed off every year..but i think the system works1

I think you misunderstood me.. Under my proposed system, the AFC playoffs would have been like this:

#8 Jets (9-7) @ #1 Steelers (13-3)
#7 Patriots (11-5) @ #2 Titans (12-4)
#6 Ravens (11-5) @ #3 Dolphins (11-5)
#5 Colts (12-4) @ #4 Chargers (8-8)

Wouldnt that be way more entertaining than having the top 2 teams sit? Arent all of those teams decent? The NBA has half of its teams in the playoffs, and the Celtics got taken to 7 games by the 8 seed Hawks. Thats WAY more entertaining than if the Celtics sat around for two weeks waiting to see who they had to play.
No?

If teams can be awarded playoff berths for .
500 seasons, why not let half the league remain for the playoffs?

yo ak, i like the idea on one hand, but on the other i like the idea that its very tough to make the playoffs. if you dont win your division, the chances are that you wont be in the postseason. its similar to baseball in that matter. basketball playoffs are great because they generate some really great 7 game series but typically the stronger, better team advances. if you let more teams into the football playoffs, it would be more likely that a lesser team goes all the way since they only have to win one game as opposed to an entire series. i guess the point i am getting at is that i favor it how it currently is because it turns the regular season into a playoff itself (well more of a playoff). the more teams you let into the post season, the less the post season matters.

AMEN!! I been saying the same freakin thing!! Why should CHargers and Eagles be in it just cuz they are in a different division with only 8 wins. Not just our Pats but other teams did hella better and didn't make it to the playoffs. I truly hate the way they do the wild card. I believe they need to do things differently.
No we should not of been 11-5 and sitting!!!!

And Lmaooo at the guy up there saying fuck the Pats, don't hate!

Back in the day (The 90's) the top teams who had byes rarely lost because there really were that good. Get rid of the salary cap and you'll see those "flash in the pan" and "getting hot at the right time" teams go back in the holes they came from.
