"Jakob Adler’s Between The Heat And Bitter Frost has a number of things to like about it. Wonderfully quirky songwriting, an unusual sense of melody, a great "dirty" guitar style that isn’t exactly garage, and a sense of sitting on the edge of something big. Preoccupation is the main theme; a wonderfully dark and self-possessed musical construction that is an aural simile for its own title. A close second is the title track, which starts as a subdued rocker and builds to an early Police-style Punk climax before returning to the brooding quiet where it started. Adler even shows off his deft guitar skills on the acoustic instrumental "Transient." Other highlights include "Halloween Photo," "It’s Buried" and "My My." I don’t know if it’s Adler’s vocal style or if its an intended method of purveyance, but the songs do come across as a tad whiny. Not so much in what they say lyrically, but in tone. I’ve gone back and listened several times and I keep coming back to the same thing. It’s a shame, because there are several songs here I really enjoyed. Whether Adler impacts many other listeners in this fashion will go a long way toward telling what sort of career he’ll have. From what passes for popular these days, it shouldn’t be an impediment either way. And he is a pretty darn good songwriter, so give him a listen. Between The Heat And Bitter Frost is definitely worth the effort."
PDXPole.com "Jakob Adler's talent for folk indie music is undeniable. His songs are as twisted and unexpected as his sketches. He has been dumping his stories into an album,"Between the Heat and Bitter Frost", that's five years in the making and long overdue."
