You may have noticed some recent field recordings posted here......
the idea first came to me during an acupuncture treatment i was giving when a skateboard passed under my window.  my patient commented to me how nice that sound was, and indeed ever since, i've appreciated the gentle percussion of a skateboard going down the sidewalk.  and the particular sidewalk in front of my clinic has a very interesting pattern, so i bought a new long board with the intention of recording it and using it as percussion on our new album.  i decided to buy a really nice little digital field recorder and i've been able to pick up some of the nicest sounds while ambling around vancouver.  one of my other favorite percussive sounds comes from underneath bridges that cars are passing over.  that love began in athens with a particular bridge on the loop that goes around athens and over some train tracks.  i used to love to walk down the tracks and climb under this bridge and listen to the cars pass by.  it was a surreal echoy rhythm that stays with me.  vancouver is the mecca for bridges.  there are so many here and i've climbed under most of them searching for the right sound.  it came the other day with shino and alice while we were at prospect point, i wanted to check under the lion's gate bridge and there it was, a perfect rhythm, a semi even decided to blow his horn in the middle.
my conclusion to this rather wordy essay - music is everywhere.  it is all around us in the wind and streams and waves and bridges and kids and footsteps, it fills me up.  today, while recording some double bamboo flute near a stream, while an airplane passed overhead, and birds sang, i played my little melody and when i stopped, the melody played back to me over and over again coming from the insects and the plants and trees.
we go into the studio in less than a week to record 12 new songs, which will be released shortly thereafter.  please keep checking back and checking in.
love, kirk
