It is somewhat needless to say that music has a powerful, almost narcotic effect to it, but I will say it anyway. Music, being an abstract thing, obviously can't contain narcotics within itself, but it is my theory that certain sound waves, rhythms, and even textures of sounds may not only bring forth or aid in the release of narcotic chemicals in the mind, but can act as a soundtrack for transcendental spirituality. I've often realized my maximum physical potentials with the aid of music, and I have personally used vocal melodies to release deep subconscious energies from my mind and soul. While I have no scientific explanation, it is my observation that the soul finds solace in music and the spirit of the human follows the music without conscience awareness. There are few to no cultures that don't seek spiritual refuge in some sort of music, from the most primitive drum circles in deep African tribal culture, to the most cliche popularized western Top 40 hits, music comes naturally sewn in the fabric of our being. I think everyone can agree that while rhetoric and propagandized language often is misleading, despicable and misinterpreted, music is a universal language. A major chord inherently elicits a happy feeling, while a minor chord captures the essence of despair and malevolence. I have watched my (at the time) 1 year old nephew Tate dance to a song, without any prior knowledge or witness of dance. His "blank canvas" so to speak already contained the inclination to gyrate when his mind processed the music. Studies on the brains alpha and beta waves further conclude that the science of sound has a natural place in the order of the human mind/spirit. If we are all connected through anything, it is music I believe. We will never agree on politics, religion and even the brand of music we enjoy, but we do all find a beautiful escape from our often harsh reality in the good old fashioned "cutting of a rug." Superstitious cultures early on may have thought it to be demonic. The prudes were just jealous they didn't have rhythm. Michael Jackson called it the boogie, and he blamed our erratic, uninhibited vibration of the body on the boogie. When a person experiences the ubiquity of vibrations in our universe, and learns to vibe with those universal vibrations, that person can achieve what the eastern religions refer to as Nirvana. When you find the connection between the vibrations in sound waves and the vibrations in your mind, body and soul, you really do connect with God. I know this is a bold statement, but I believe it to be true with more sound and logical conviction that a Christian, Muslim or Jew believes in the eternal suffering and damnation of dissenters of these said religions. I rant on this topic because I believe there is a tendency in this world more, now than ever to fall victim to the trivialities of political rhetoric and agenda driven thought control. Life can be very confusing sometimes, and most of the time you don't know who to trust and who to believe. You seldom know who got paid off, and who sold you out, although you can assume everyone has. You can fall victim to fear, insecurity, desperation and lack of confidence if you listen too closely to the demagogues of media and government. The complexity of society is daunting and incorrigible, while consciousness, love and God are really quite simple; you just have to unlock them in an instance through revelation. If you have to use a system of beliefs to try to interpret these things, then you have over complicated the issue and gone down the wrong path. Understanding is instant, and it can come in the simple form of being carried away with music. The social, man made strings attached to music pervert it, but there is an essence to be understood and realized in an instant with music. No man can show you. Every man and woman has the potential in them to find out themselves. So when a person begins to speak in fundamental and absolute terms, you can assume they are regurgitating talking points and are completely full of shit. Whether you use music to relax, affirm your anger or energize your soul, I encourage everyone to turn to the science of sound in these hard times and let it show you simple truths that persist through the rough waters of these times. Don't seek the truth, let it realize within you. And at the very least, let it be the one thread that ties us all together in this very divisive society we co-exist in. You must face reality on a daily basis to survive, but take the time out of your day to stop stressing of job loss, health care, wars, late bills, debt and dirty diapers and treat yourself to some soul cleansing music. May I recommend High while Driving this Friday at the Des Moines Social Club?
