Sorry for the lack of posts over here lately - I've actually been posting more to my other blog at http://evillesbian.blogspot.com the last few weeks. My latest thing over the last couple weeks has been playing my wii more and trying to be more active. You know how it is - winter time, it's yucko outside most of the time, no daylight hours after the work day is done = time to gain weight. This time of year I tend to always start thinking of various home gym type solutions which never really works for me. I do it for a little while and get bored. This time I decided to try using my wii to get more active. I've a competative person that does well with physical activity when I can get myself to stay interested. If I had an indoor basketball court I'd be crazy happy and would be in there all the time... since that isn't likely to happen in this lifetime - I needed something else. I bought the wii fit over the summer, did it for a while and then got busy with other things. I pulled it out last month and started using it again which is helping. I can easily compete with my own scores and try to get better.
I love the aerobic games like step, advanced step and rhythm boxing but I was worried that as I get better they aren't going to challenge me enough. The rhthym boxing does have various difficulty levels which helps a lot but the step games don't. So I looked for a balance board game that would have the step and boxing programs and found nothing! Grrrr.... After talking to friend that said she played dance dance revolution and thought it was pretty good - I decided it was worth trying.
New Years Eve I was still deciding what to do.... I could go to the bar, drop an easy $100 and start the new year with a hangover.... or I could go to the store, buy dance dance revolution for $70 and start the new year with sore and aching muscles. Hmmm - blow $100 with nothing to show for it afterwards or spend $70 for a game I'll hopefully keep on playing for a long time - no real contest there - I bought the game.
I've been playing it daily and it is challenging to say the least. I'm still working on the beginner setting as I try to figure out my balance and the moves. Plus I've discover that I'm way further out of shape than I realized and even the easiest setting can be difficult to master. Yesterday I was so sore I could hardly move but I still managed to play for quite a while. One of my friends told me I'm nuts to push it while I'm so sore but I disagree with that. I think while I'm sore is the best time to push it. Warm up the achey muscles and push through it. After all that is what we did in boot camp - you couldn't slow down just because it hurt - you had to keep going. Besides I know I need to get in the habit and stick with it in order for this to do me any real good. Plus, even though I'm  far out of shape right now, I've been in excellent shape many times before - I know if I keep going it won't take me very long to get back into it. I respond very well to physical activity - it's not like my muscles haven't been trained before - it's just been a while.
So the wii games are how I've decided to challenge myself to be more active this winter. I have no excuse not to do it since it is right here in my living room and I can do it any hour of the day. Now I just have to follow through and keep it going. Anyone else out there using their wii as a fitness tool?
