Current mood:  drunk
Lately, I've received requests from a few friends asking me to e-sign a petition to have this group banned;

http://groups.myspace.com/fuckthetroops

Although I feel the anger that this site generates (more than most of you can imagine.) I can't in good conscience sign this petition. Sorry if you don't like that, but I have my reasons. Two main reasons.

First, it's not worth the effort. It's just a bunch of dumb kids.

Second, the First Ammendment protects this as free speech. When I took the oath of enlistment, I pledged to protect the Constitution which protects free speech. That's all speech, including stupid speech. There's nothing really extraordinary about the "Fuck the Troops." site. It's just the same old ultra-leftist, anti-war, anti-American rhetoric. The only difference between this site and a dozen others like it on MySpace is the invective they direct towards that sacred cow of American culture, the average American soldier. "Blasphemy!" you say. But I know better. In my opinion, every soldier that I had the privilege of working with in Iraq is a hero and a true patriot. But soldiers are not saints. They are human beings, capable of good and evil. Don't believe me? Read a history book about the My Lai Massacre. The "Fuck the Troops" crowd argues the point, quite rightly, that America's military is not conscripted. Every Soldier in Iraq right now made a choice to be there. Just as I made a choice. Our Army is a volunteer Army. If America fights an immoral war, then the soldiers on the ground are partly responsible for that immorality. We can't just say, "I was only following orders."

Of course, Operation Iraqi Freedom is not an immoral war. President Bush was absolutely right in ordering the invasion of Iraq. But let the "Fuck the Troops" crowd voice their dissent, as rudely and beligerently as they wish. That's the beauty of America. People can say what they want without having to fear the torture and death that would befall a dissident in another time and place, say, Ba'athist Iraq circa early 2003.

God bless America, God bless President Bush, and God bless the troops.

I think the people behind the fuck the troop thing is either agent provocateurs or someone trying to profit over controversy (somehow) either way they're better to be ignored.

hey wolf....in a way i agree with you about the "Fuck the troops" Yes we do have a freedom of speech, and honestly i could care less about what people say about whatever they want to talk about. But the reason i signed that is b/c i dont like when people say "Fuck me"...... or "Fuck my friends" you know what i mean.               Good blog though and thanks for the rest of your service.

While I have never been to this groups web page, although I am currently trying to view it, the title alone violates myspace's ToS.   People may have the right to free speech in the U.S but they still have to follow ToS if they want to use a companies features.  I however will not sign stupid petitions that are being passed around on myspace, if I believe something is worth fighting for, I will go straight to the source or straight to the company to do something about it and I have a feeling that I am going to be reporting this group to myspace once I am able to view their group.  I'm not telling you to do something one way or the other but they do NOT have the right to post this, not on myspace, let them buy their own web space if they want to belittle our troops and the beliefs that our country was founded on.

how goes it? well i have to say i have spent my share of time "doing my duty" to "fight the good fight". I have spent over 104 days straight at sea without seeing dry land. we bombed afgahnistan steadily after sept 11th. i will openly admit that yes i chose to be in the navy to go to war, if necessary, to protect my family and my friends and, well to protect the rights that we have as american citizens. i didnt sign up to go to war, to protect peoples rights and sacrifice my relationships with everyone dear to me, just to listen to those who are ignorantly one-sided bash me without knowing anything about me or the things that really go on. not what the media portrays. one thing i have learned though, and this is from experience, is that all the countries we go to arent bad. every country has a group of people who want to protest us being there, and every country has its share of people who dont want us to leave. the funny thing about this is that its sort of like america. we have our groups of people who love the military and what they stand for(not to be mistaken for what actually happens, i.e. the touture of pow's) but the spirit of what we are here to do. not to be out done is the group who hates us and everything we stand for. you cant just pull out the troops for every location around the globe without destroying some coutries economies, or some towns anyhow, and then expect everyone to come back to the states and find a job. what kind of sense does that make? our coutries fine military is spread around the globe to ensure that americans in general have the creature comforts that no single person can live without, such as free speach. now i agree to a point that the petition is kind of usless. it wont do any good. the only way to get it removed is to directly tell the famous "tom" that it is in violation of the users agreement. then and only then can you get it removed without violating anyone's rights. on the other hand, it is blatantly rude and should not be tolerated. most in the military do not deserve to be treated this way. ok, no one, period, deserves to be treated thi way, for any reason. i guess i should stop rambling on now, it is a sensitive subject. i coem froma military family. i have been in for 6 years and seesn a few things. i guess i will end this with a thank you for being fair, despite what they say about you friends in the service, and you, and way to keep up the american spirit. god bless.

"The Eyes..." has it exactly right and good on you mate, I'm also refusing to sign the damn thing. Sure it pisses me off, I almost can't believe people would do this shit, but isn't this reason #1 we are in the military? To fight so that we and our family and jackasses like them are allowed to say it?
