Recent I had a discussion that for one reason or another brought up the idea of equality. Now, as a young white American male, I technically have no right to say anything on the subject, if I interpret the rules correctly. I am, after all, the cause of everyone's problems am I not? the Living Devil as it were, the monarch, 'The Man', the one that represses everyone else and stays on top, the one with all the breaks, the rich, the elite... I doubt I need to go on. I also don't think I need to extensively point out how extreme this kind of viewpoint is, though truthfully I think there are some people that really do believe it. I will concede that in the past, this type of viewpoint may have some accuracy. Today, however, I'm not seeing any kind of superiority that can be claimed. Quite the contrary.....
The drive to Equality among all people has an interesting effect on society. People claim to want to be treated the same, to eliminate segregation based on race, gender, creed, religion, or a myriad of other qualities. And to accomplish this... we form organizations... made of specific types of people... who in mass protest that they are being kept separate from the rest of society. But don't these people contribute to the issue by separating themselves as well? The concept of 'Different but Equal' doesn't seem to exist. All people are 'Exactly Equal' right? There are no differences between black people and white people and Jews and Christians and men and women and... right? We're all the same. So why do we divide off at all? Why do forms have identifying categories like Race and Gender and Age? Aren't we all the same?
Of course it matters. People carry with them personal heritage, experiences, and bloodlines that are passed down. These are things people are proud of. But it is also the source of strife in the world. People cannot accept the idea of 'Different but Equal'. Different must mean one is better than the other. People take pride in being different than everyone else. It makes them special, unique. No one WANTS to be exactly like everyone else do they? Perhaps that's the problem. People band together and protest how they are treated differently; they group and identify themselves not by their similarities but by their differences. If a group of people, for example, the gay community... was suddenly treated like everyone else. Government just shrugged and went "Whatever, do what you want", and just didn't care anymore... if they were ignored, they're differences made moot, the idea of 'Gay Pride' became just as typical as being happy you were tall or had red hair? Would people REALLY be happier, or would they lose their uniqueness, what sets them apart, and no longer matter in the scheme of things? I don't mean to single out the gay community of course, this scenario applies to all people. Even redheads really.
I guess the point of all this is that... Equality is a fine line to walk. People want to enjoy their uniqueness, but not be persecuted for having it. Prejudice, segregation, racism... these things are not only caused by the majority in casting out the minority, but also in the minority cutting themselves off from everyone else. Pride is a wonderful thing to have, but it also separates people. I for one wish that I could have pride.. but White Pride seems to imply I must be a Nazi or in the KKK. So who is the minority really? Modern Equality hasn't made us all equals, it's made White people the scapegoat for everyone else's problems. When people can come together and just be people, when the differences don't matter, Equality will be achieved.
And you know what? There IS a place where that has been achieved. It's called The Internet. But, until the rest of the county catches up with Cyberspace Equality concepts I'll be doing my thing as only I know how. Oh, and by the way, Caucasian is a racial slur. You may address me as European American.
