The Gilded Cage was a movie theater located at 628 Broadway, just down the street from the Broadway (815 Broadway). It was opened around 1966/7 and didn't have a very long lifespan. As far as I can tell, it was built out of a storeroom.
Unlike many of the downtown theaters, the Plaza, Cabrillo and Broadway, the building that contained the Gilded Cage is still standing. It has been remodeled several times since so any trace of it has long since vanished.
As for the kinds of movies that played there?
Well, the morally instructive ones that dealt with gripping social issues of the day. And they had boobies.

I'm also including the daily ads for the Center and Cinerama.

San Diego Tribune. Wednesday 13 December 1967.

Cool! The Gilded Cage is one of the city's most obscure "lost" theaters. "Mondo Cane" eventually became a cult film, but I wonder what the downtown audiences thought of it in '67?? And how ahead of their time was Pacific's Center to offer reserved advanced seating - by mail, even! - for their Christmas/New Years screenings of Gone with the Wind (with only two screenings per day, INCLUDING the matinee!).

Our projectionist friend pointed out, tho, that them Gilded Cage's address was WEST Broadway - thus, it was on the other end of Broadway, a few doors down from the Tower Theater, rather than at the other end near the Broadway moviehouse.

You're right about the Gilded Cage. I was going to do up an entry for Cinema Treasures, but I'm glad you caught that (though I did walk by where 628 Broadway is, wouldn't surprise me if it had been in that location).
Sadly, 628 WEST Broadway is no more.
Wonder if there are any Gilded Cage photos out there. They didn't advertise a lot- I have one ad from 1969. I wonder how long they lasted.
