I Have A Tale To Tell...

...sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well...

Growing up, I looked to rebels as my heroes. I found most of them via the world of rock: Guns N' Roses, Skid Row, and Motley Crue were the guys who seemed to piss my parents off the most, so their posters would cover my bedroom walls. But, a woman became my hero that same year as well. She had an effect over my parents even stronger than Axel Rose. Her name was Madonna. She sung songs about praying, while burning crosses blazed behind her. She knelt down to a black saint, and kissed him on the lips---a shocking gesture to my 11 year-old eyes. Madonna had a spell over me, which to this day hasn't been broken.

Discovering her back catalogue was quite an endeavor then. She'd had a good 7 years of music before I'd come across her. I bought one album after the other, falling in love with each of them in a distinct way. Funnily enough, a song called "Live To Tell" didn't have much of an impact on me then. Songs like "Cherish", "Express Yourself", and "Dress You Up" were more appealing. "Live To Tell" was too mysterious for me to "get", so to speak. Before I knew it, I'd forgotten about the song.

when I first heard Live To Tell I was bowled over. It was haunting and the lyrics got to me instantly. It was and still is one of my favorite Madonna songs!
