"Facepilot - Facepilot"
Facepilot -
FacepilotReview by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Backline Records
Release date: 2009
Two
years after releasing an inaugural EP, Portland, Oregon's Facepilot
returns with a full serving of jagged riff metal. Like a fair number of
bands out there these days, this three-piece can be sonically aligned
with the likes of Mastodon, but for those of you who came to that
particular party late, clutching a copy of
Crack the Skye, you might want to brush up on your history, as Facepilot's more of a
Remission type band.
Indeed, there are more than a few “Crusher Destroyer” moments to
Facepilot,
but to the band's credit, they never really stick around long enough to
remain the focal point. If nothing else, Facepilot's an inventive band,
never afraid of switching gears mid-thrash and venturing down
unexpected paths, as on both “Big Milk,” with it's Primus-like bass
line, and the proggy, ambient “Manwords.” At the same time, they never
goes so far off the reservation that they forget how to lay down some
deliciously heavy riffs, as on “Alaska,” “Circular,” “Meowsie”
(lunkheaded, goofball chorus notwithstanding), and “Pink Bunny.”
I'm sure those from the PNW are already on board, but everyone else in search of some good heavy ought to check these guys out.
