Magazine Recognizes The Tulsa Sound
The major music magazine Spin says Tulsa rocks in this month’s edition.

Tulsa’s music scene gets a big ego boost. The major music magazine Spin says Tulsa rocks in this month’s edition. News On 6 anchor Jennifer Loren reports that’s music to their ears at local live music venues and to Tulsa bands.
They rock. They roll. And, they know how to put on a show. And, they’re probably playing at a local venue right now.
Tulsa’s homegrown music scene is amped up and turning out diverse new music every day.
One example is the band, Callupsie.
"I’d say it’s an indie-rock band, soaked reverb indie-rock band," said Aaron Hamby with the band.
Hamby, who is Callupsie’s lead singer and guitarist, grew up in Tulsa and says his band’s been part of the Tulsa music scene for three years.
"I think it’s vibrant. I think it’s a great scene that everyone can be a part of," said Aaron Hamby.
And now, a lot more people can be part of Tulsa’s music scene or at least learn about it thanks to the spread in Spin Magazine.
It names local heroes like the creators of D-fest and Hanson. Plus, it highlights several local bands like GHOSTS and Callupsie.
"I thought they did a really good job and it allows us to get national and worldwide exposure," said Aaron Hamby.
The spread also names local venues like Exit 6 C, Mercury Lounge, The Continental and Soundpony where the live music scene is thriving.
"There’s this burgeoning growing art community here that is getting recognized. So it’s wicked, you know. I’ll totally take it," said Mike Wozniak of Soundpony.
Tulsa musicians are always looking toward the city’s music future. But, they say there’s a lot to be said for Tulsa’s past.
"It’s built on inspiration, you know, from Leon Russell to Gary Busey, if you’re from Tulsa and you have any ties here you’re probably an inspiration to the bands who are up and coming," said Aaron Hamby.
The magazine covers that as well, mentioning all the big acts from Tulsa and the ones who’ve sought out its audience.
All this press is good, but local rockers say don’t get too excited.
"It’s just another drop in the bucket though because you don’t make it when you get in a big publication like that," said Aaron Hamby.
Still it’s enough to keep these Tulsa musicians spinning.
