Current mood:Insulted Category: MySpace
I am so aggrivated. Some of you know that I run a MySpace graphics site at www.1337mama.com.
So, whitelisting is when the MySpace admin gods allow users to click on your website link, and it brings them directly to your site instead of that warning page. I asked them to be whitelisted a couple weeks ago and here is my response from them:
"... the site was found to contain Spyware.
Upon visiting the site it launched a popup advertisement for a registry cleaner, the file called "Registry CLeaner" available at zoombli.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/zoombli.com/summary/
As such, the request has been declined and the domain will not be whitelisted, all future requests to whitelist the domain will be denied due to the risk associated with your site. -- MySpace.com"
I was shocked! I've been busting my ass on it for a year and a half now and got into it purely for the love of making graphics. Now that I'm making money from Adsense and Valueclick, well, bonus! Or so I thought.
First of all, I do not have spyware on my site!! I do not host any type of malicious anything! In fact, some of you know that I was a sys admin for years, and computer/website security is high on my priority list.
Registry cleaner ads are technically valid ads, though I would never suggest going to their site and using one. I was a little put off when I heard this though…I was used to seeing random ads on that pop-under including Dell and other legit services.
Anyway, I'm just pissed that I was accused of doing some shady shit. I've always gone out of my way to make my site teen-friendly. Always – let alone computer-friendly. In fact, I don't know of a single MySpace resource site that is harmful. We are a tight-knit group of web and graphic designers and we take our work seriously. Some sites do steal graphics from other sites, but I don't bother with all that drama.
What does upsets me though, is how these same "bad" sites actually have MySpace admin friends who will whitelist these sites and even reinstate closed MySpace accounts after they were caught doing something against the TOS like spamming or using a friend adder. Like, it figures, right? :/
Even as I write this, people in my group are saying that registry cleaner ads are legit and that they are everywhere and not inherently spyware. The user wouldn't get spyware from clicking on the ad – they would have to go to the site and download that shady software.
Either way, I have taken it down in a last-ditch effort to get my site whitelisted. If they deny me, like I think they will, I am so putting that ad back up. I don't count on ad money to pay for my hosting, but it is my play money, and I'll be damned if MySpace is gonna keep this mama from buying a new outfit now and then.
