Motorbreath

What: Motorbreath, a Metallica tribute band.

Motorbreath members all love Metallica -- but not everything the classic metal band has ever done.

The Portland-based group concentrates on material from Metallica’s first five albums, said bass player Mark Trees.

“We do it from the (1991) Black album and back,” he said. “We can’t agree on anything after the Black. We pretty much agree that ‘St. Anger’ (2003) was horrible.”

Motorbreath is named after a song on Metallica’s debut album, “Kill ‘Em All.”

The group’s really into the morbid metal genre. It rose out of the ashes of Creeping Deth, a cover band that did both Megadeth and Metallica songs.

Trees said he likes Metallica because “it’s really aggressive, but it’s not all straight speed thrash stuff.”

(Trees also plays in the AC/DC tribute band Live Wire, which has played at the Cadillac Island casino.)

The Motorbreath playlist includes such lively metal hits as “Creeping Death”, “Master of Puppets” and “Seek & Destroy” from Metallica’s early days.

The 3-hour show, described as “a long, loud night,” includes lots of smoke and stage lights. “We’ve tried to make it more of a live concert experience,” Trees said.

Guitarist Chris Nichauls dresses in black and plays the same guitars as alter ego James Hetfield. Gunnar Dhillon wears a wig to make him look more like Kirk Hammett, Metallica’s lead guitar player.

Band members have never met the real Metallica.

“I think Chris met (former Metallica member) Dave Mustaine,” Trees said. “That was as close as we got.”
