Slicing Grandpa     "The Greatest Hits"
http://www.myspce.com/slicinggrandpa  http://tanzprocesz.free.fr
When you have a band like Slicing Grandpa, is it really a "greatest hits" or is it more of a sample of the work done from 1993 - 2005? IDK! It doesn't matter. I enjoyed this offering immensely. If you are new to Slicing Grandpa, this is the best place to start, because you get to check out material that happened over more than a decade. You could even pick your favorite S.G. period and collect only that period. Lets talk about it: The cover is 2 slices of cardboard, held together with metal pins, and decorated with a glued on logo done in black white and red. Thats real DIY! I love it! The sounds on this slab are really quite diverse and difficult to catagorize. At times you are tempted to say "noise," but often there is too much of a mucial element involved to validly go that direction. You might want to umbrella it under the "experimental" catagory, but I don't think that really tells the tale either. Hell, some of this feels like rock/metal/grind etc. There are guitars, and they are mean splattery guitars. There are drums, and they pound like a cannibalistic chef tenderizoning ass-hole steaks. Sometimes there are even vocals, but don't count on understaning much. This sounds like someone drenched a band in gasoline, lit them on fire, and recorded their last burning agonies as they strove to put out the flames with their instruments. The overall fell of this recording is frenzied and chaotic. I'm foaming a bit just from listening. Yet, somehow I also get the feel that its not all to be taken 100% seriously. There's an inherant sense of humor to this material. A few minutes of Slicing Grandpa will be enough for most tender ears, and I can immagine all of the parents out there telling their youth to "Turn that Shit off!!!" If you are a seasoned musical mental mastrubator like this reviewer, this recording has a lot to offer. These songs paint a really messy picture of an extremely dynamic and undersold career which deserves a lot more credit than it has ever been given. Take the freakies genius of the Butthole Surfers, and degenerate it with some Black Mayonaise, Throbbing Gristle, Sockeye, and Anal Cunt, thats a bit of an idea of the kind of directions this this will hand, draw, and quarter you in.
