VII Gems "Classic Styles" Dance Workshops

When you look at the 30 year plus history of true classic Hip Hop dance you can see the progression, development, inspirations and evolution of two traditional dances that came out of New York City, "Breaking" and "Rocking".

"Classic Styles" presents exclusive "Breaking" and "Rock" Dance Programs. These programs are ideal for dancers interested in learning fundamentals in "Breaking' and "Rocking." These two world famous NY dances will be shared together in one residancy and will be conducted by official traditional dancers from the 1970's in NYC.

B.Boyin/B.Girling, also known as "Breaking", is an incredible dance with a rich South Bronx history. It is a dance directly inspired by intense break parts within songs that had percussive drum and instrumental sections. Its movements are in response to these breaks and involve rhythm, style, character and body control.

"Rock", also known as "Rocking", is another incredible yet misunderstood dance with origins from Brooklyn and other boroughs in the city. Pioneering dancers from the Rock Alliance will take you on a journey tapping into different styles from different neighborhoods in NYC. This provocative dance is also directly related to the song but, involves almost all aspects of the song, including the beats, lyrics arrangements etc. The dance is done mostly on top but also possesses specific floor movements. It is one of the least understood and researched dances that came out of NYC.

The VII Gems "Classic Styles", Dance Program is a concept concieved by Ken Swift and the NY Rock Alliance. These workshops are made up of dance classes and lectures directly related to the traditions of "Breaking" and "Rock", two incredible dances that came out of New York in the 1970's. What separates this course from others is that the VII Gems and Rock Alliance staff are authentic pioneer dancers from the early years of the the scene.

The VII Gems staff including the NY Rock Alliance at Breaklife Studios have all been a part of their respected dances for over 30 years and encompass their original concepts and philosophies of B.Boying and Rocking in NYC. Attendees will participate in Rocking and Breaking classes which include lectures on each the history, and present state of the dances, including fashion influence & terminologies. These are introductory fundamental workshops for all ages.
