Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s a cultural revolution was taking place in this country. Many young people all across this country looked at the establishment with scorn. The corruption, greed and warmongering had reached the point of utter disgust in the eyes of the generation set to inherit that way of life from their parents. The young people began protesting and dropping out of that sick society, the hippie revolution was born. This movement gave rise to communes, shared living spaces, shared meals, shared wealth, what little there was. Many of the communes raised their own food, sold crafts, bartered and tried to live their lives in harmony with the earth. During that same time experimenting with illegal mood altering drugs was also a large part of the hippie revolution. The hippies dressed funny, smelled funny, and had questionable moral behavior, all of these cultural negatives were framed by the media as a disease in the American landscape. The dope head hippies were unwelcome most everywhere they settled. Yet in today’s world they would almost seem quite normal and would certainly be living “Green” lives. Funny how those same hippie folks should all be in their late 50’s and 60’s now, watching their retirement monies fade away to the same corrupt and greedy system they revolted against all those years ago. Perhaps the time is coming that we, of those times past, will have to dust off our peace signs, head band, and bongs and move back on to those communes in an effort to make it past the times ahead. The old hippies could once again lead the revolution of “Green”.  Maybe this time we won’t sell out, maybe this time we can get it right. Maybe this time it could be the revolution of the evolution of mankind living in a community in harmony with the planet.
PEACE!!!!!!!

There were many things about the hippie movement, also known as the flower children, that I admired.  It was the rampant drug use that turned me off.  Didn’t approve of it then, and don’t approve of it now.  The communal self sufficient lifestyle was a plus.

I read or heard it somewhere recently that once the generation of those who are now in their 60s or so dies off, this country that once was will be no more.  It certainly is interesting to observe more recent generations, their habits and values, and compare it all down the line.  A great deal repeats, and the variations are always so deep that I have a hard time trusting anyone who speaks in generalities.  One thing I know for sure, I for one held the dream of the simpler life for many years.  In fact, I still do.  However, as you said it, those who came before me sold out, and that has only made it all the more difficult for future generations going forward.  Talk is cheap.  Actions speak louder than words.  For the most part, and this is a sweeping generality, we are on the road toward that lost horizon.  Nobody knows where it is, nor what it will hold when we get there.  We can alter our course to reaching it, but for the most part, we stay the course and see more of the same.  Damn the man and his master plan!
