"The sense of dynamics is marvelously realized. It's homemade; the very particular places she evokes beg exploration. Her penchant for imagery is idiosyncratic and her desire for expression is no less than inspiring" - Mess and Noise magazine

"Shiver Like Timber plays her quiet pop songs with a cute wistfulness that captures more than a few hearts." – RAVE Magazine

"Shiver Like Timber writes songs that evoke images from the depths of your childhood and Debussy-like reveries of places you've never been to and times you've never experienced." – Time Off Magazine

SHIVER LIKE TIMBER

..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Brisbane's Betony Dircks (Shiver Like Timber) happened into writing songs. Music came about spontaneously for her, starting out very much as a hobby, keeping songs locked up safe and sound in her bedroom. It's a good thing she performs and records (nearly) as often as these songs pop up; a lot of people are thankful for this, it's evident after playing for the last couple of years.

"I find that so many songs are being invented every day I don't know what to do with them all".

They're quiet and wistful and always explorative; a lot of stuff blows her mind and she's sharing this through songs. It's a refreshing way of telling stories, of conjuring imagery.

Dividing time between playing larger venues and smaller house shows and warehouses, the last couple of years have seen performances in all sorts of settings. Shiver Like Timber is the sort of musician whose doesn't necessarily need to be surrounded by similarly quiet folk-inspired stuff; in fact, it's surprising how well she's fit into bills alongside the likes of Die Die Die!, Quebec, Coda or I Heart Hiroshima. She's just as much at home playing with Holly Throsby, Laura Jean, Pikelet or Camera Obscura; The Brag magazine picked her show at Sydney's famous warehouse Lan Franchies as one of the best local gigs from last year. Each time is charming and haphazard and endearing in a very particular way, and it's safe to say she's gained a reputation for beguiling audiences in all locations.

A self-titled EP released in 2006 (on Handclappin' Records) bolsters this sound; a spare combination of guitars and vocals. The addition of piano and guitars with added layers of each carves unique spaces. Add to these a beguiling method of storytelling and a will for experimentation and it's growing every day, songs getting up from off the bedroom floor at a rate Dircks struggles to keep up with. Currently working on an album due for release early 2008, they keep coming. Words stumble in front of and behind guitar picks, taking time to look at the interesting things with an eye and and ear for the most peculiar of details. Influences of indie-folk artists like Joanna Newsom, Cocorosie and Cat Power are evident in her vocals but her spaces are visibly her own. They're lucid, these songs; streaming out into guitar and microphone with an immediacy bursting with a fervor for music and art and everything.
