Fox Jaws At Odds (Or, Exercises in Separation While United in the Fall)
By Jessica Lewis
Releasing
this record four months after they initially expected to must have been
rough for Fox Jaws, but maybe it was for the best. This album is a
testament to hard work and the sweet affirmation that comes with. At Odds
finds itself as an end-of-summer showdown between uppity urgency that
craves more adrenaline and moments of calm reflection towards the good
and bad. While it may take some time getting used to Carleigh Aikin and
Dan Allen's pipes (according to their website bios, they enjoy
smoking), they sit comfortably in the fast progressive structures and
almost-arena rock. "Two By Two" and "Ahab's Ghost" are the major works
of art by the restless guitars and "The Enabler" does well directed by
the keyboard. Often labelled as small-town heroes, after raising the
band in Barrie then relocating to Alcona, Ontario, Fox Jaws have
successfully filled out into all parts of At Odds' confident city sound. (Nevado)
