On a previous blog, I talked about Chaka Khan as the ultimate duet partner, but this evening, I'd like to provide a great example of Chaka as the Ultimate Team Player. This is on another level from singing a great duet, and once again, Chaka excels without breaking a sweat. Fourplay. You know the jazz supergroup...Bob James (Piano), Nathan East (Vocals, Bass), Lee Ritenour (Guitar), and Harvey Mason (Drums)....Each member a musical VIRTUOSO without question! In 1993, Chaka Khan performed on the title track on the group's 2nd album, 'Between The Sheets'. The results of this collaboration were outstanding, and the song was released as a single with an accompanying video.
While Fourplay played a few dates in 1994, Chaka Khan joined the group on stage to sing on 'Between The Sheets', and to say they improved on the studio version, would be an understatement. The stage was jam packed with greatness, and seeing this remarkable blend of stellar talent is simply a wonder to behold. Augmenting Fourplay & Chaka, were Philip Bailey (of Earth, Wind & Fire), and Phil Perry...You know these cats can BLOW!!
All in all, Chaka was so comfortable on stage with Fourplay and there seemed to be a mutual admiration on display. Chaka's was simply on point, and she provided yet another exercise in vocal restraint....she did turn the heat up a few times when needed. I can't say enough about Chaka in this video, and I look forward to reading your responses......ENJOY!!!
