First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who comes out to see us and supports us in this jazzless void we call Southeast Alabama. All you guys mean a lot to the band.
When I came back from NYC, I was pumped! I was excited about what I had experienced, stoked about what I had learned, and finally happy in my own skin and location (I do miss New York a lot, though). I had a new light shed on my music and how I wanted to direct my band. In an earlier blog, I warned of an impending renewal of the CHB. Well, it's coming, I promise. We have had some setbacks and more may be in our future but we are working hard to expand our stylistic character and make the music our very own. I am also writing and arranging more, too.
The new drummer, Eric Ward, is fantastic. I also hope to add a keyboardist and/or a horn player to the mix soon.
We will always do standard jazz-we owe that to the cats like Bird and Dizzy who made jazz what it is. However, you can expect even more odd time signatures and weird harmonies and all the stuff we like to do. Expect more unison runs and more virtuosic playing from everyone, too. You will also see more covers of tunes from different genres like hip hop and rock (an arrangement of Weezer's "Hash Pipe" is currently in the works). There (as always) will be some funk in our sets but a funk band we will never be. I love makin' it funky like dirty socks and pulling out my Victor Wooten chops but my main goal is to showcase the acoustic side of life. That's what I dig most.
With that said, I hope that all of you stick around to see what happens. The music is coming along nicely. We are already much tighter than we ever have been and it's only going to get better. The additions to the lineup will probably take a while to get right but we will get it right.
I hope to have some new audio up for everyone soon to give a taste of what we have become and I hope you all stop back by the page to check them out.
Thanks again for being a fan.
