Hey  peeples- Read the brief nutshell of the situation and then tell me your 2 cents.

I have the opportunity of going on tour with the Dallas Children's Theater for the second time. The first time I got to see the country was about 2 years ago. Just when I'm ready to  focus on a film career, moreso than theater- I get the chance to play this awesome character "Lida" again. The show is called "A Midnight Cry" and in essence brings to life a young girl's story of gaining her freedom via the Underground Railroad. The show is very moving for both the kids and adults, and was very well directed by Sally Fiorello. I played the lead role and hardly ever left the stage.  Now the show is about to tour the country come October and I haven't completely officially decided whether to go -which would take me away from the agency/auditioning for about 3 months-or stay put and potentially land more film/tv/commercial/etc roles.

Being that I've done a DCT tour before, I know some of the Pros/Cons that go along with the ride: Of course I'd get to see the country again & I'd be the star of the show-so to speak, but I don't know yet who else would be cast and don't want to be stuck on the road with a bunch of divas (been there- and it's entertaining at times but not always). This is a non-equity tour so the cast/crew (prob about 10-12 folks) must aid in driving a moving truck and van across the country(but you get paid a lil bit per hour to drive), putting up and breaking down the set, props, costumes, so on.  You get a pretty decent tax-free weekly per diem. And then there's the (I think it's bi-weekly) paycheck, so I'd be able to save up some money-I hope-once it's all over. OR now that I finally landed a decent role in a TV movie, I could stay in town and focus on getting more things like that now instead of waiting til after the tour is over in April/May '07. What might you do in this situation? I am requesting your 2 cents. Thanks in advance. RhiMack

I wouldn't pass up an oppurtunity for a possibility? Especially not one that is guaranteed. If you are already chosen, go and do your best, in my opinion. You also have the upper hand having been in a similar situation. Now if it means you won't be as prepared as you could for the shoot, that's different. But if dates and times don't coincide, and preparation isn't compromised, go. Could you possibly cross market the movie during the tour. Or am I reaching?

The thing is: this particular movie isn't really the issue. They don't conflict at all. What my situation is, is something that's kinda happened before in which case I go on tour and other things come up through my agency that, because I'm on the road, I can't just and go read for. So essentially it is a situation of choosing possiblity over something that's already a given. But it's a tv/film career I'm ultimately after. So it would mean me really working to reconnect all networking possibilities after getting back into town if I tour. Make sense??

So I just found you on Dennis's page....
and the first thing I did when I got here was be nosey.... so in case you haven't made your decision, yet, I say don't tour.  You say film/tv is what you're after then you need to go in that direction.  I know it sucks to turn something so wonderful down, but I think in these situations where you're faced with two "wants," you gotta break it down by "needs."  A year on the road would mean a really really long break from focusing on your true goal, ya know?  I totally understand  how it is, though.  It's not just turning down another job, it's turning down a huge compliment and the opportunity to relive an amazing experience.  But if you went the other way, you'd be turning down steps toward your final destination, essential networking, reputation... and other jobs... it would be different if you said your goal was to win a Tony someday.  Hope it works out whichever way you go!!

I say... focus on your career in film/tv/commercials. Isn't going on the road again with DCT considered moving backwards? The only difference being you're now the star. That tour is hectic. Plus that's a LONG committment. If Terry is cool with it, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Be careful with those long stretches of time apart. Some say the heart goes fonder, but statistics have proven that when the cat's away the mouse will... Come on somebody. I feel my help coming!

If you do decide to go on the road, make sure you get a bomb laptop so you can continue working on your graphic design jobs while you're away. Good luck either way.
