why do all these bands now days need little gimmicks to get them notice? I'll admit its damn hard to get your sound out there especially online, but really, Ukulele?

i think its cool that the water color paintings band has a toy drum machine and uk but i dont like how every band now has something like that just begging for you to listen.

i'm sure that they dont see it that way when they think of it yea so i'm not going to pick on any particular band but couldnt people drift a little bit farther than ukulele? maybe its cuz all my friends played them growing up and i never thought of playing music back then. who knows? i do think that its gone a little too far with making your band into a "brand" though...

I bought a book "Indie Band Survival Guide" and there's a website by the same name and both really help you prepare for what you have to do to be noticed as a musician and i've stumbled across some pretty cool things because of them, not to mention being able to put all my tracks online for free.

the thing i dont like about the guys who wrote the book is that they want you to sell your band. they want you to turn your musical group into a corporation and capitalize of it.

sure we'd all like to make money but do you really have to sell your soul to make it as an artist? i'd bet half the people that put money into that book dont even realize all the same info if not more is on the website for free. i lost fifteen bucks to get that book, and the end product was worth more than that to me, but it could have been free.

whats my point?

dont give in, be strong and stay away from people who want to give you success of any kind. dont let people tell you different from what you want.

i'm making music steadily and no one may like it but me, but thats not why i make it so who cares? most people will never like even one of my songs, but that means i've got a niche (like they say in that book) its just that i'm not going to exploit that niche.

Would you?
