The Bands

MCRAD

Professsional skater and musician Chuck Treece started the punk rock band McRad with fellow skater Zeke Zagar, and the rest is history/legend. Formed in the 1980s in Philadelphia, McRad came to define a generation of punks, through their music and videos such as Public Domain, Ban This, and Propaganda. Chuck went on to tour with another pinnacle punk band Bad Brains, and in addition to his own solo projects has recorded with artists as varied as Sting, Amy Grant, King Britt, Busta Rhymes, Aretha Franklin and many many others.

IMANI UZURI ROCK QUARTET

Ecletic, dynamic IMANI UZURI is often compared to artists like Grace Jones and Nina Simone as one who defies category. This bohemian spirit "... never fails to mesmerize audiences with her narcotic blend of...ethereal sounds." (Time Out New York). Imani has just released her first album, HER HOLY WATER: A BLACK GIRL'S ROCK OPERA and is currently performing a theater piece of the same title, based on the music from her album, while incorporating coming-of-age memories from her youth in rural North Carolina and anecdotes from her nomadic travels around the world.

PURPLE RHINESTONE EAGLE

From the Philadelphia City Paper: Andrea Rhinestone Eagle (everybody in the band has adopted that surname) goes from singing to screaming without missing a beat, except when punctuated by bassist Morgan's surprisingly scary death-metal growl. And Ashley holds it together with unfazed, confident drumming. Between bouts of recording (they've got a studio in their basement), Purple Rhinestone Eagle has been inciting dancing with their riotous psych-rock/metal/punk blend.

Afropick, an utterly unique venue for people of color playing hard music, hits the stage at the Rotunda! There are few places in Philly where you can consistently hear music by musicians of color who consistently push and challenge our definitions of music and politics, all while making us want to get on the dance floor too. Add quality performances to that list, and you come up with one name: Afropick!

This sixth perfomance in this quarterly series dedicated to promoting musicians of color in alternative genres promises to be even more successful than the previous four shows that brought over 700 people out.
