Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, July 30, 2009
Right so, August 8th we are playing Boardmasters festival in Newquay (with Cypress Hill...we appear to be on the "stoners" day...haha).

On our rider we state that we don't want anything on our rider that is made by Coca Cola or Nestle (for obvious reasons if you know our stuff!).

So we just got an email from them pointing out that Relentless is an energy drink that is made by Coca Cola.

Bad News.

We hadn't really realised this.

Too be honest its a slip up on our part as we have so many fesitvals lined up and we are working away on the next album.

Obviously, with tickets sold already (some of which are to our fans) its too late to pull out.

So i just wanted to publicly apologise on here for doing a show that kind of goes against what we preach (and generally practice).

Up until now we had managed to avoid any such shows but this one slipped by us somehow.

Anyway, im sure it will be a delightful weekend.

And maybe bring your own drinks with you....

Pip

To be honest mate, if you were to pull out because of the moral quandry you find yourself in then I think all your fans would be behind you, they might even join you in their boycott.  And if you did the boycott loud enough you might get some good PR out of it, also you will be educating people to the link between the Relentless brand and Coca Cola, the amoral multinational that murders on a daily basis.  Performing there is a bit like Castro winning the revolution and then having the celebratory feast at a Mcdonalds.  maybe a  bit extreme, but you know what hypocrisy means, and you know what a hypocite is.  You're intelligent and know what you're doing, whatever choice you make just make sure it's yours.  Plus, we all sell out eventually, that's why it's best not to wear your heart on your sleeve to begin with.

i agree to an extent, however, surely explaining this link to the people that are there would have a greater effect than preaching to the converted via the internet and pulling out? Sadly we arent a big enough band to make that much of a new storm by canceling a show and it certainly wouldnt concern those up in the towers of coca cola. Im sure we will figure out the best way to deal with it all in the end.

I understand that you have eduacted a few people on the link between Relentless and Coca cola, i myself did not know this so i'm speaking from personal experience.  But you have to admit, this isn't buying a kit Kat, this is taking money covered in blood from someone you have ben very vocal about being your enemy.  You just have make your own choices, but do you think you will be ever to recite that lyric again?  You should never have to make a choice between career and morals, and if you do the choice should be so easy you don't hav to blog about it.  It's up to you to decide whether you can accept money from a hand you have denounced as corrupt.  Whether people will tar you with the same corruption is another matter all together.  It's like, if you can't resist their power, how are we supposed to?

i disagree slightly. This isnt a career over morals thing. It was something that hadnt been noticed. And now, the only people that will be effected if we cancel is OUR fans. Incidently, Relentless were originally an independant company and were bought by coca cola (distancing them slightly from the bad bad history) and, at this stage, they are losing coca cola a hell of a lot of money. Theres no doubt that if it was simpley a morals thing then we would cancel. We have tunred down many well paid shows in the past that were connected to different companies that we do not approve of. But, at this stage, the only people that would be screwed over by us cancelling would be the fans of ours that have bought their tickets already. I totally see your point and, obviously, you are entitled to your opinion, but i feel that pulling out wouldnt have any effect on the monster that is coca cola. If all the bands were to be up for pulling out then that would be a different story! :)

I agree that you have to think of the fans and your own professionalism, so respect for that.  I would not like to buy a ticket for your show only to find out not only have you cancelled, but I've also given money needlessly to a monstrous international corporation.  so I totally understand your decision to carry on.

However, I do have to say that your point about it not having an effect on the company as you're only one band is, and I'm sorry about this, a disgusting platitude.  It is exactly the same as saying that one man can't make a difference, and therefore reinforces the apathy prevalent within our society, and the heart of the sickness within our system of governance. I will close with a quote as there is always someone who has said it better first, "All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke

oh definately. And that is why i have maintained boycotting coke and nestle as best i can for over 10 years. But in this scenario the festival isnt being run and put on by coca cola so its different. With so many fesitvals these days people need corporate sponsorship to get things going. The people putting on the festival arent the enemy. But us pulling out will not effect the advertising that coke still get from sponsoring the festival. That is all i meant by us pulling out not effecting them as a company. But, again, you are entitled to your opinion.

Pip,
you are absolutely right that coca cola arent gonna bat an eye lid if you pull out, and its a shame that so many products can be linked back to these big multi nationals, as it makes it hard for someone like you to actually boycott them, this gig being a perfect example. But my philosophy towards this kind of problem is a 'fight em from the inside' kind of mentality- if you can get your enemy-in this case coca cola- to pay you to do a gig where you denounce them as evil, then thats one point to you isnt it? most of your gigs probably have political and moral overtones anyway i would guess, correct me if I'm wrong.

oh yeah and cheers for the link sounds interesting.

I live in newquay and yes I can see your point of veiw and do agree with it ....But I can tell you now that your fans (me being one)in newquay have more to think about than buying a ticket and not seeing you because you pulled out of the festival. Newquay is a lovely part of the world but......... what you read in the papers about under age drinking and younge people coming here each summer and dying from whatever stupid thing they have done is real....The few in this town make money from festivals ,back packers, property developers, cheap alcohol..DRUGS. EVERY summer a few more younge people die in NEWQUAY because the council like the easy road to making money ....more KIDS less brain cells....I have lived here for Ten years and see the shit that happens when parents leave there kids to go on holiday in newqauy ... I just find it strange that when the shit hits the fan and someone dies the parents blame newquay....
