Our friend Kevin from Fredrick & The Golden Dawn likes "Liquor Store" so much that he's only gone and written a review of it! Sound.
Here it is:
"As the song fades in I’m reminded of the intro to Leonard Cohen’s Famous Blue Raincoat; heavy chords immediately playing on your emotions dragging you down with each progression. A drained, acquiescent vocal pleads “ Oh Liquor store look what you’re doing to me” Harmonic notes like blurred street lamps in the background set the tone; a beautiful tragedy. The character talks about his love and hatred of that which rules and has ruined his life, alcohol.
Next a delicate tremolo guitar trickles like liquor down his throat slowly killing him. He asks to be freed from the chains of alcoholism. A lamenting line about a lost lover taken by alcohol leads him to his final plea and the real tragedy as he asks “Ol’ Liquor store please just give me a drink”
The song soon breaks beautifully into an instrumental. The drum beat tripping over itself adding to the drunken theme. The rest of the story you are left to imagine for yourself. There is no redemption. This character is like a Gothic hero, there is both good and bad in him, death and life in him, possible redemption and certain demise. Tomorrow morning there’ll be stabbing sunlight, a sore head, a bad temper, empty pockets and an unwanted will to carry on. In my opinion, a masterpiece."
