Adorned once in robes of the most vivid green
You were a towering ancient, a mountaintop king.
The eldest, the strongest--You never bow or break
Whether weathering time decides to give or to take.
You stand strong and sturdy, the most dependable friend,
Giving homes to so many--charity without end.
You shelter strangers who come by from storms and from heat
And bless numerous lives with great things to eat.
Though you are the biggest and most powerful of all,
The heights of glory don't restrict you from helping the small.
Unselfish and sacrificing, you give all without pay
Always stretching your arms towards the sky at the end of the day.
And to reward the great honors of the kindness that flows
From your hands, you are given more colorful clothes
So that all may pause in reverance to your beauty
For you lived your life well and made giving your duty.
But an end will soon come, and we know that it nears,
For now you stand there half-naked, shedding colorful tears
As the cold grips your claws and strips your dying body bare
And for all that you've given, you are left in despair.
Those you have blessed walk by without aid
And they tread on thier way through the tears you have made
And the gifts uncollected lay rotting away
As light surrenders to shadow and dark kills the day.
But don't fret my old friend, God knew all your deeds,
He knew how you sacrificed all you could for our needs
And when this season does pass and all the death ends
You've been given a gift back, the chance to live again.
So I thought I would stop here and just let you know
That you're still beautiful to me while covered in snow
So keep standing strong, and the ice will soon crack
And the leaves of your branches will bloom beautifully back.
