(I wrote this on June 23rd)
I want to remind everyone that it's Mike Jalali's birthday today (June 23rd). I think of all you know by now that Mike passed away in March. Everyone should think of Mike everyday, but today is his day… so take a minute to celebrate his life. He was a special, unique, and talented guy…remember how hard it is to forget him. And after a lot of thought I decided that I am disbanding "barbarasteele" . It was a hard, but NOT difficult decision. Mike and I conceived the band and with him no longer with us-we can't carry on without him. It would not be right. I want to celebrate his life by closing down the band while we were on a creative high and after playing some of our best shows. I am shutting the band down in respect to him and all we've done. I would like to thank every person who supported us by listening to our songs, sharing our music, and talking about us. Also I would like to thank the media people who supported us. But most of all I want to thank everyone who came out to our shows. Everyone…to the people from our first show at Storyville in 2004 to our last show at Bottom Of The Hill last March. I also want to thank all the musicians who joined the "barbarasteele" family and the people who indirectly (and directly) helped us conceive "barbarasteele". Everyone from the days in Mike's cramped lower Haight apt., my parents garage, Soundwave Studios, and to most recently at Secret Studios. I want to thank all of "barbarasteele" family members (in order of appearance): -Kelly Geer -Justin Blaire Vial -Jessica Wilkins aka Marie LeGrange -Erin Skidmore -Dana Suchow -Valeria Calderoni -Jeff Gleason -Marc Perry -Elise Cumberland -Jacqui Elliott Also, I would like to thank all the extended "barbarasteele" family members: -Kurt Schlagel (sound/mix/wisdom) -Brittany Cole (management/money) -Anne Regan (art direction) -Brent James (tour manager/dear friend) -Me & My Arrow (sister band) -Alwyn Quebido (guitar guidance/stallion of the stable) -Nick Follett (sax/ear/unseen member) -Jimmy McCracklin (soul/guidance/chaos) -Fashion Hoard (origins) And the musicians (bands/artists) who supported us, or SHARED a bill with us: The Catholic Comb Uni Black Fiction Dilettantes Rykarda Parasol More musicians: Daniel Ieela Grant Gavin Baskett April Latranga Erica Mulkey Anton Patzner
Our Famous Fans (these are people who we know for a fact own a "barbarasteele" record): Bjork Chan Marshall Karen O. Green of Scritti Politti
I would like to also thank the supporters and the media who we could always count on: -The Ant Show & West Add Radio -DJ Queen Bee & KALX -Alley Bones -Pirate Cat Radio -K.Tighe -Amoeba Music (they carry all of our releases) -Maurice Edwards and E.O.M. -Deli SF We have one final release ready for sale in the next couple months. The album is called "The barbarasteele Mixtape" and it is a comp of outtakes, demos, live cuts, promo stuff and rehearsal outtakes. I think it accurately tells the story of "bsteele". It sums up our beginnings, and is a great complementary piece for our first record (The Art & Sound Exhibition EP) our last record (Soul, Set, A Blaze) and where we were before Mike passed away. If you'd like more info on us, and want to contact me or track down our releases hit me up here. I will be leaving the myspace page up…and keep it as is. So in the immortal words of Mike "Geto" Jalali: "It's a done boy…" Thank You Very Much M. Nero
