Have you heard the new song?!?! Lily Allen's caramel voice
and edgy Brit-pop vocals illustrate the confusion felt by nearly every
twenty-something for generations of human history. A bass-line, underscored by
syncopated rhythms, crawls in steps along the harmony of Lily's folk-art, semi-raspy,
matter-of-fact melody.
.. ..
But beyond that, one lyric, "But, it doesn't matter,
'cause I'm packin' plastic. That's what makes my life so f?*#ing
fantastic" rings so true of all the emotions that are brought forth by the
song's max-impact title "The Fear." The tune even edges on out-right
rebellious sarcasm, stating, "I'm not a saint; and I'm not a sinner. Everything's
cool, as long as I'm getting thinner."
.. ..
Even in the beginning, the soothing lullaby-baby tones
greedily dig for diamonds while people die to find them. That's something to
say, seeing as the entire track is written from a youth-learning-from-adults-but-knowing-the-difference-anyway
point of view.
.. ..
This doo-dum-diddy about "The Fear", IMHO, is regarding
what the chapters of money and power in human history have passed down for future
generations to inherit. Children have no power, nor money. Yet, they are raised
with the understanding that *both* are valuable, perhaps the most valuable
'things' one could attain. So, why would it matter if people die while finding
diamonds? All the time, no one is quite busy making sure that something like
love could be deemed as valuable.
.. ..
"Out of the mouths of babes," perhaps?
.. ..
'Nuff sed!
