I did an Oscar prediction blog amonth ago.  Here is how the results compared with my predictions.

I am looking at the habits of the Academy in their Oscar picks this year.  In the last couple of years the two Academy darlings are Johnny Depp, and George Clooney.  Both are great actors but does the work this year merit nomination?  I don't think so.

The two best movies of last year were No Country for Old Men, and There will be blood, and I also liked Atonement. Michael Clayton was not an outstanding movie at all, so I am surprised that  it got the nomination.  I expect  this to be the year of Coen, and No Country for old men will win Best Picture and Best Director, which it did.

Best Actor definitely has to go to Daniel Day Lewis, for his incredibly compelling performance in There Will be blood, which it did.

Javier Bardem, I expect will win Best Supporting Actor for his amazing performance as the psychopath in 'No Country for Old Men.  A performance this outstanding, and a character this compelling is rare indeed. Which he did.

Best Actress, I think will go to Marion Cotillard for her portrayal of the relentlessly tragic French singer Edith Piaf.  As a backup perhaps Cate Blanchett.  I have not seen the Julie Christie performance, although sentiment may favor her.  My favorite acting performance Amy Adams in Enchanted was not nominated.  Right again.

Best supporting actress is wide open.  I haven't seen I'm Not There.  I am going to pick Saoirse Ronan in Atonement, although Cate Blanchett  might get it for playing Bob Dylan.  Tilda Swinton got this one.  This was a hard to predict category.  She did give an excellent performance in this movie.

Best Director is the the Coen brothers for No Country.  Right again. Very surprising Atonement did not get nominated.  Usually Best picture also gets a Best Director nod too.

The screenplay categories are very strong this year.  I think adapted screenplay will go to No Country.  Which it did

Original screenplay. Personally I think Ratatouille was best, but I have a feeling Juno might get this, so as I am picking winners this is my prediction. Juno got it.  So right again.

I am picking Ratatouille for Best Animated feature.  Right again.  8 out of 9 predictions.  Maybe I should have placed some bets.  My favorite bit last night was when the winner of best song for Once, was called back out from backstage to give her acceptance speech when she was cut off first time.  Here is the list of nominees

Hi Larry

I haven't seen most of these movies, perhaps they are on their way to NZ?? Or perhaps I just missed them. I know Sweeny Todd is showing now at theatres here, but I haven't seen it yet. What did you think of it? I love JD, I think he is very versatile as an Actor. But, I also love Daniel Day Lewis - my favourite being the Last of the Mohicans (an oldie but a classic, timeless goodie). I haven't seen the new one "There will be Blood". I must see if I can find it here..

Great to see you posting again, sorry I can't make any suggestions..

I saw Sweeney Todd, the other day. I didn't think it was that great, and this whole slitting people's throats while they are sitting in the barber's chair I found to be quite morbid and disturbibg to watch. It does have a good cast. Hollywood seems to like these performances about killers.

Well I had a feeling Sweeney Todd would be a bit like that, which is why I will wait till it comes out on DVD before I watch it, not too interested in throat slitting, especially on the big screen!!! I made enquiries about "There will be Blood" - but no one has heard of it here.

It probably won't be out there for a few months. It is three hours long, but its absolutely brilliant.

'No Country for Old Men' was fantastic, and Javier Bardem was so chilling! Hope they win.

Me too. Let's see if my predictions pan out. Two great movies from last year that were overlooked were Mr Brooks with Kevin Costner, The Lookout.
