Religulous- An Amazon Review I guess there is a place for you, if you are the Bill Maher and Ann Coulter type, have an opinion and take it to the extreme, and don't care what anyone else thinks. Your outrageousness and ability to shock gets you attention, which is what you really want. It's funny how the more extreme you are the more you resemble your opposite.
In this documentary, Maher's position is he does not believe in God, he is right, and he will mock and ridicule anyone who has a contrary opinion.
Not only that, he constantly interrupts them so he can do his supposedly funny shtick. They are playing the straight man to his supposedly funny guy. After all, this is not a sincere inquiry into religion, it's the Bill Maher show.
In fairness, some of his arguments are good, and he does highlight where some people take their belief to a ludicrous level.
His statistics on Atheism seem off. If I remember corrrectly he claimed it's 16%, whereas according to Wikipedia it's more like 6%, in the USA.
The funniest bit in the movie is where he interviews the Jewish extremist, who counters Maher's interruptions with, 'no please, let me finish,' and Maher becomes increasingly frustrated at this annoying guy, and terminates the interview. Two very egotistical people, peas in a pod really.
Another interesting piece is the Christian theme park in Florida, (apparently one actually exists) where he manages to get an interview with the guy who plays Jesus, who gives a good account of himself, one of the few instances where Maher listens. Then he gets thrown out of the theme park.
Most of his ire is saved for Christianity, although he takes a little poke at Mormons, and Muslims too.
Maher suffers from a spiritual autism, just because he doesn't get it, he doesn't understand how anyone else could.
Is the absence of evidence, evidence of absence? Just because someone does not believe God exists, is that evidence that God does not exist?
Some people will find this movie amusing, more will find it obnoxious and be offended. In a way, I commend him for being willing to offend so many people. I just don't think he does it in a very thought provoking or amusing way. If you like Maher, and have similar beliefs, you might think it hilarious. If not, well..
