Indian land has continualy been taken from their people. The Black Hills has been deemed by the supreme court to have been illegally taken from The Oglala Sioux yet the settlement was a mere pitence compared to its actual worth. Considering that from one mine alone, one company extracted 9 Trillion, yes thats 9 trillion dollars worth of gold. The oglala were right to turn the offer down for that would have meant it was lost forever and a settlement had been reached. Surely something that has been stolen should be returned or its value paid in full any thing less is criminal. The fact that another sacred site is now under threat is confirmation that the US has no intention to stop its ongoing cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples. Please take time to sign the Save Bear Butte Petition. It already has nearly 4000 signatures, if each of you sign it and forward details to all your friends you can help raise that figure to the goal of 500,000.

On my page T left a video by Alex Jones and it speaks of our public land being used as callateral for our national; thus, it is being transfered to the U.N. and big -no mega- banks see it as a long term way of making money. As you know it costs money to go to national parks but soon more and more national park will not allow cars to enter and people will have to be bussed. This is how they will jack up the prices to view this land. And eventually that land will be built upon. It is sad to see our national wildernesses being taken away from us -as alex jones says- like it's some kind of land grab; in fact, it is a land grab. And when people get angry about it we're the crazy ones we become the terrorists when all we want is our peace, quiet, and a place where we can escape from the hustlin and bustlin sounds and sights of cities. Places like this are great for visting, for me it's better than the beach.

Do we need a Biker Bar on Bear Butte? Are the Biker's Associations made aware of someone attempting make this atrocity? It seems that it would be quite advantageous to contact all the Harley Associations (and there are alot) as well as any biker websites and offer to them what is being offered as this new Biker Bar. Perhaps they would not be so happy to be involved in the use of sacred lands...I have ridden with groups of very wonderful people that are "Biker's" aka the kind that would make these rides...and Jay Leno, by the way, is a huge Biker...
Maybe get this info to him...matter of fact...anybody else wanna join me in sending this info in any form (pleasantly...he is a big advocate for worthy causes) to NBC in care of The Tonight Show? Let's let those who give a care some info...I highly doubt that those that love the open roads would lend money to "vacation" or "ride" to such an abomination! Kudos Squared on Posting this info!

I'm not native American but I'm a biker that has returned to the Mother Rally yearly beginning in 1999 and I'm a biker that has always heard the imperceptible sweet sound coming from Bear Butte.. it sank deep into my spirit the very first time I stood beside it.

Kelly, many bikers are aware of the Buffer Zone around Bear Butte.  Many bikers are angry at the way the campground owners and watering hole owners have gotten their fingers into Meade County, Sturgis and Rally Commission politics.  Many of us have already made reservations for our 2006 camping elsewhere.

I am in a way ashamed that the biker world has changed so much in the past few years.  Owning a Harley these days makes a loud statement that a guy can afford one, whether he rides it during the year or not.  A huge number of Rally goers these days go to show off their expensive toys and to drink and to spend all the money they can on concerts, trinkets and so forth.  Its become the "in" thing to do these days.  It used to be a bunch of bikers that gathered for quiet comeraderie mixed in with some loud pipe noise.. and riding in the Black Hills.. and sitting around the campfire at night exchanging riding stories.  There isn't much of that any more.  Campfires have even been banned now in Meade County for the two weeks surrounding the Rally, regardless of drought/no-drought status, forever and ever.

I have been doing what I can to spread the word about the Buffer Zone around Bear Butte in biker websites and forums.  My own blog contains an article I wrote urging bikers to respect the serenity and sacredness of the Butte.  There is also an article entitled Save Bear Butte at thecanaryproject blog.  At the end of the article is a place to sign a petition asking that sacred land be preserved and honored and protected.  Also, at the Rally in 06 a number of bikers will have banners and stickers attached to their bikes proclaiming their respect for the Buffer Zone.  I have gotten wind of one group on non-native bikers that plans to spend a day near the Butte with banners proclaiming they are bikers for the preservation of that which is sacred and of historical importance.  I am making up small stickers that say "Respect the Bear Butte Buffer Zone" to hand out free of charge at the Rally.. these can be attached to windshields, fenders, helmets.

The world changes.  Always.  I accept that.  But I will not let this wonderful land be desecrated by my biker brothers (and moreso the biker venue owners) without standing up and speaking my heart.  I am sad today but I will have a grin in store for every biker that honors the Buffer Zone.
