Bloody Mary is the talent behind the recently released album “Black Pearl”, the first artist album to appear on the Contexterrior label in seven years. As Mary found herself deeply inspired by poet Charles Baudelaire, particularly his fascination with contrast, a common theme on her album came about organically: "discovering beauty buried beneath the darkness." Mary’s collection of tracks is a marriage of techno, melodic ambience and experimental breakbeats. And with production help from Sierra Sam and label boss Jay Haze (plus contributions from Argenis Brito, Danton Eeprom and Jona), together the tracks mount up to create a beautiful, well-rounded picture. Before her Room One debut on August 15th, we decided to zoom in a little closer and inspect the finer details...
Can you still remember your first encounter with electronic music? Where were you and who did you share this experience with?
Of course .. It was a long time ago (I guess in 1991 or 92) and I was very young. Electronic music had just arrived in the south of France in illegal settings, which we called "rave parties", and at the time it was totally new and crazy! My crew and I were so excited to attend these parties. After the first one, I realised that something would change with the music, and with people too! A new generation of movement. We know the rest of the story up to now :)
Your album 'Black Pearl' has been inspired by your personal experiences in life and the poet Charles Baudelaire, mainly his pieces from “Les Fleurs du Mal”. Can you talk me through the process of how you transferred text and memories into music and production?
The first track I did was "Black Pearl". This track is a real mirror of my emotions and of course my life. Baudelaire's poems, and I hope my music, give a sense of optimism underneath the darkness. "Les Fleurs du Mal" was a personal influence of mine, but it's not important to be familiar with that work to enjoy my album. The album is about a more universal theme: we are surrounded by crazy, dark things in our lives, and it is not avoidable, but we can react to our situations in a positive way, and with the right perspective we can find beauty and positivity. That is why in "Black Pearl" we hear the lush, melodic strings shine through the tumbling, clattering beats. And there are many other styles on the album to reflect a spectrum of emotions. Jay Haze gave me the chance to make something different for his label Contexterrior. He's so open minded and he understood from the start my vision for the album. And my friend Sammy (Sierra Sam) passed on his years of knowledge and experience, showing me how to translate abstract ideas into sounds.
As a DJ and producer, I’m sure you come across mountains of music daily - what does it take for a track to make it into your music collection?
I have really different sensibility between producing and DJing. When I'm playing in a club, I only want groovy music, not dark sounds. It is rare that musicians just listen to music within the genre in which they produce.
Are there other artists or genres that have helped educate and mould your musical taste?
Of course I listen to electronic music, but I also listen to a lot of rock music. One of my favourite bands is Joy Division.
I read that you enjoy touring for the aspect of meeting new people and experiencing new places and that a slightly more negative aspect to touring is waiting around in airports! How do you pass the time when you’re waiting?
Airports ... The best way to pass the time is simply to read a book or to watch a movie :) And sometimes for fun, I just take a look at the people walking by .. It is good the see all the emotions. I try to imagine some stories about these strangers.
Can you describe your perfect night out?
Yes, it would definitely be sharing delicious food with the people I love (my boyfriend and my friends). I love the feeling to be seated at the table with a glass of red wine and ready to speak about everything!
If you could meet the younger version of yourself, what would you say to her?
To enjoy life to the maximum, because time is running so fast!
What are your plans when you have finished the 'Black Pearl' tour?
I'm planning to go to Mexico for the new year and to spend a few weeks there. I really love that country, everything is so good there: the weather, food. And I really need sun and sea too. These are the things that I miss so much living in Berlin.
What advice can you give to budding producers out there hoping to make their own stamp in the wonderful world of music?
First, to be patient. Second, be proud enough of your music that you will fight for it. Third, don't always listen to what other people say... be confident with your own opinion and style. But don't get overconfident! :)
