Mix Master Latin Bitman Returns With The Follow-up
To His Critically-Acclaimed Self-Titled Solo Debut

Park SummerStage With Plastilina Mosh And Julieta Venegas

Bitman’s music may touch down in Brazil for a swipe of samba, skip up to New
York for some hip-hop scratching, move over to Jamaica for a hit of reggae, and
park in Puerto Rico for a dash of salsa, but

Nacional Records is proud to announce that Chilean mix master Latin Bitman will return with his new album ‘Colour’ on October 20th. ‘Colour’ brings Bitman’s infectious fusion of dub, electronica and hip hop with some bossa nova and turntablism thrown in for good measure. It is the follow-up to Bitman’s critically-acclaimed self-titled solo debut from 2007.

“For me, the album name ‘Colour’ represents the central idea that this album displays a variety of colors, or musical genres,” Bitman says. “My goal is to take Latin music to all sorts of listeners. So there are songs sung in several languages; Spanish, English and Portuguese.”

Bitman (legal name: Jose Antonio “Toto” Bravo) recruited a variety of vocalists on ‘Colour,’ from fiery MC Anita Tijoux to chanteuse Francisca Valenzuela. “Each artist represents a different scene within the Santiago music world and that’s why I sought them out,” Bitman explains. “I also collaborate with these vocalists at my live shows on a regular basis. Francisca Valenzuela is a pop rock star, yet on this disc she sings some reggae-tinged songs. Anita is, in my opinion, the best hip-hop vocalist in Latin America. Funk Attack and C-Funk made up Los Tetas, a very influential Latin funk group.”

Following the launch of his self-titled album, Bitman made his U.S. performance debut in the summer of 2008 at Central Park SummerStage in New York City with Julieta Venegas and Plastilina Mosh. “Playing in New York City and specifically, SummerStage, was such an honor, first as a Chilean, second as a DJ,” he says. “Even though it was an open-air daytime show, the crowd was raucous and very responsive. I hope that it was just the first of many more shows to come in New York and the U.S. in general.”

Growing up surfing on the northern coast of Chile, Bitman combines the chill-out beach vibes of his childhood with the funky urban sounds of his cosmopolitan home of Santiago. Bitman builds each track from scratch, creating his own samples, then mixing and re-mixing them to form the song.

“The main difference on my new album is that there are more songs with vocals, which makes it a little more ‘pop’ or accessible,” Bitman says. “But more than differences, I think I have made a marked development in my own personal style, a sound that can be defined whether it’s instrumentals or tracks with vocals. I’m always getting closer to finding my ‘musical identity.’”

Surfing dominated Bitman’s passion for much of his childhood as he started with the sport at the young age of 9. He eventually became a serious contender on the world stage, representing Chile in the Olympic games of surfing in Huntington Beach, California. While Bitman’s focus would move towards music, surfing remains in the soul of his songs.

“With my music, there is always the sound of the waves - a sensation that helps elevates me to the coast - along with that total madness of the surf tubes and the beauty of simply feeling free.
