Current mood:  curious
Category: Music
I don't usually post on Myspace, but I know there are more music connoisseurs here than are likely indulging me over at my other site, so I wanted to throw something at y'all: I was reading one of the music blogs I frequent (Idolator, if you must know), and there was a discussion on who was the better punk band, The Sex Pistols or the Ramones (or more specifically, which was the better album, Never Mind the Bollocks or Ramones, both released in '76.) Compelling cases were made for both, but I want to hear what y'all think. Which was the seminal punk band, and why?

Answer in the comments, por favor.

As most people are not to familiar to either band, the obvious answer by just the name sake would be the Ramones, but to people that have knowledge of both bands, I would have to say Sex Pistols. The Ramones were more mainstream, mind you, I said MORE. Although I like both, and don't favor one over the other, but to answer your question, I would have to say Sex Pistols. Reason being, not a very well defended why, but, I personally feel they represented more of the British Punk anti-christ, doing all they could to be the bad asses, more than any other, and not trying to act as if that is what they were doing. They were more against the norm and against the "man". I think Nirvana followed in their footsteps as being more innovative for their time. Now I know how knowledgable you are, and how objective you are, its your job, and I am sure you find my defensive of my answer not quite what you were looking for, but, thats all I could come up with, haha.

My answer is based on 3 things:

1. I was surprised to find I have a Myspace login and password in my pswds.xls file
2. The Ramones were and always will be the definitive punk band (after Fugazi, Minor Treat (yeah, TREAT) and Dead Kennedys (disregarding the minutemen and black flag for now, as well as DRI, circle jerks. bad religion and bad brains, all of whom put on great fecking shows), but the Sex Pistols with Never Mind the Bollocks embodied more of what the punk rock blossoming meant for me and that was anti-establishment political views. The SP really had a much more political bend than I think the Ramones were ever capable of producing.
3. "Rock N Roll Highschool" vs. "Sid and Nancy." Nuff said.

Punk rock may be dead, but it's still kind of languishing in my iTunes.
