This noise crawls from the same dark place as Neil Young's Down By the River, hollered with strike-leading passion by frontman Gareth Liddiard, over the sort of melodies you can only wring out of strangled strings struck with clenched fists. This is rock of an Old Testament vigour, particularly on the rueful The Freedom In The Loot, where Liddiard's howl breaks off into frustrated, disgusted worldlessness; songs of injustice and betrayal that make for intense listening, but with a heroic quality to their soulful ire. Brilliantly, they mean it, man.
