I had a completely different post planned for today, but then this band sort of blindsided me. The Weeks are a young band from Jackson, Mississipi and do that sort of southern indie rock we've heard from types like Kings of Leon (the most obvious comparison, given that unmistakable drawl in the vocals). The sonic palette is different though, with these particular songs showing off a more structured pop sensibility and a bit more chaotic energy in the way they attack their instruments. Like an unhinged pop version of what we might expect from Kings.

The first (and title) cut off of the new The Weeks record is a hard-hitting, borderline punk rant with a great lead guitar line. It instantly recalls so many bands like this: The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, etc. In fact, the only genre I get more submissions of than minimalist indie chant rock is postpunk. Most are either overproduced or just plain boring. But The Weeks are different. Perhaps it's because they're also capable of sweetacoustic duets ("The Sailor Song"), and rattier
Americana ("Altar Girl"). Or maybe it's the slowbuild and clever arrangement in "Teary-Eyed Woman." Whatever it is, these guys are officially on my watchlist. A very strong debut album.

Straddling the perilously thin line between the Kings of Leon and MOR would prove too much for most bands but the Weeks have conspired to upset the odds. Given their tender years it is remarkable that they have already mastered the art of sounding interesting while not exactly reinventing the wheel. 'Buttons' is a rampaging anthem from their new album 'Comeback Cadillac', a piece so fuelled with youthful vigour and neat melodic hooks it will be a major surprise if it doesn't become a decent indie hit. I mean it has all bases covered, the slow gravely intro, the building momentum and the inevitable mosh-pit frenzy of a chorus. Yep, I am definitely sold and pine ever so much for a huge mane of hair to colour my slightly retarted head banging routine which spans its 5-minute running time. 'Comeback Cadillac' is out next month on Esperanza Plantation. KD
