Midnight Circus-The Carousel Phonograph:
An old scratchy record turning unevenly has been used in movies countless times to add a really creepy feel to a scene.
That is where the idea for The Carousel Phonograph came from. I actually wrote in all the pops and clicks using a typwriter-key sound patch.
Clive Manor-Hall of Portraits:
When I began writing this song my intention was to create a constantly swirling down feeling that could be used in spinning vortexes. There's still some of that but the music went where it wanted and when my wife heard it she said it reminded her of a row of paintings that seemed to be watching you as you passed so it became Hall of Portraits.
Demagogue-Basic Instinct:
This is the fastest track on the cd, almost an action-adventure piece. Man has just become self-aware and the first thing he does is start killing.
I got my inspiration for this from Keith Emerson's First Piano Concerto-3rd Movement.
Demagogue-Sanctuary:
This is the slowest track on the cd. A group of survivors from the previous track's fighting seek sanctuary in a dark, foreboding cavern. Out of the frying-pan and into the fire so to speak. After miles of possible pitfalls they do eventually find their sanctuary. An enormous room illuminated by a strangely shaped nest of phosphorescent stalagtites.
