It's finally 65 Degrees here in New York City and the atmosphere can't be nicer. The collective hysteria due to the drastic weather change is suspended in the air as New Yorkers walk around with big bright smiles on their faces. I join them in their state of grace and decide to call my friend Pablo to go have some beers after work. As I talk to him, he lets me know Spooky is playing today (March 10th 2006) at the Guggenheim, so we decide to go without thinking about it twice.
Upon arrival, at about 8pm or so, the ambience at the Guggenheim was quite varied and interesting. All age ranges where covered from the 17 year olds to the 75 year old Guggenheim patrons. Spooky was doing his thing coupled with an oriental violin player and singer, who seemed to be sampled real time to create a deeper sonic texture. The duet was rather nice and the acoustics of the Guggenheim as well as the exhibit by sculpture David Smith added a complete new dimension to music listening, it was a full immersion experience.
Later on, after the violinist stopped playing, Spooky played a nice little eclectic CDJ set that included mashups as well as more popular tunes such as "you got me going crazy, turn me up, turn me up..." which was quite funny due to the whole context of the situation. People were dancing and the vibe was great.
All in all they should do this more often, seems like the new hot trend in NYC, museums such as the MOMA now have a weekly Dj event every Friday with avant garde artists such as Diplo entertain us with their music.
