April 9th, 2008 ..

It’s something taken for granted a lot these days. Most listeners really only care about the finished product. But when you’re talking about art it really is all about the process.

The evolution of technology has a changed a lot about that process. Believe it or not there was a time when artists actually had to be in the same studio to record songs. At this time the collaborative aspect of music was integral because everyone was right there actually collaborating. These days not so true.

Even more technology has become the central point of the process, something hinted at in my discussion with John Book on music and technology. Music is born from the technology not just recorded into it. In my own work the technology itself is becoming a member of the band.

But as these changes happen its important not to forget the roots of recorded music was in the capturing of the artistic performance. The weight of the performance lay on the artist. Its so easy to piece together a project in the computer these days, but then you put that project on a stage and the whole thing just falls apart.

In that regard it was a breath of fresh air for me to hear a few months back that Dolphin was rehearsing his band The Airmath for their upcoming recording sessions at The Peabody. I actually did a double take. Rehearsing for a recording session. And not just a one off rehearsal, cats were rehearsing for weeks for the sessions which just started last week. Originally slated to be just an EP, after the first few sessions I hear everyone around even the studio manager realized something magical was happening. And so now more songs are being recorded for a full length Dolphin & The Airmath project. I’m not going to spill too many beans here but there are a lot of tricks up that mans sleeve which will be shown on this project.

Okay I will spill some beans. Below check out the song "Sunshyne&TheRain" from the third rehearsal to get an idea of how amazing this project is going to be. Word is after the sessions the band will be doing a couple of live dates. I’ll keep you posted on that. And in other other news O——r O——y. You heard it hear first.
