How a lullaby is written... by Sarah Humphreys.
My wonderful and vivacious cousin Sam Buckingham (no not the foxy little brunette singing/songwriting sensation that you all know well! I actually know two Sam Buckinghams, weird.) asked me while she was pregnant with her first child, who is now a healthy little girl named Georgia - to write her a lullaby. My sister-in-law was also having a baby at the time and i agreed to try and write a lullaby. Hmmm....
There was something about this request that i knew was important. I'm not sure why, but one night i sat down with my guitar and all the words and melodies came through me like a big burst of light. This is usually how i write songs and i really felt all the emotions of a mother when i was writing this song, which was really beautiful and i cried whilst scribbling as fast as i could, all the words and things i was feeling. I felt like like whatever this small little child did, it would receive my unconditional love and understanding.
I made a little demo of the song for Sam and for Sophie, who both loved it so much. As soon as little Georgia and Joshua came into the world they have heard this lullaby at least 5 times a day at their rest time and before bed. I decided to record it properly and put it on my EP 'Autumn' so i can share it with other Mums, Dads and babies as i think it has a message in it which tells them they are very loved. It gets played in the special care nursery at Gosford Hospital now too and it has been said to create a peaceful feel in the room and in the babies, so please give it a try when you need it :) I have put it up on my myspace now for anyone to listen to, but if you'd like your own copy - the cd is available from me (now) and record stores (next year.) Just message me on here.
So...now i am a mother-to-be the song is even more special and i'm sure my little one loves hearing it while he's in my tummy. He goes all quiet and doesn't move or kick when i sing... maybe he's sleeping. Or really bored.
I hope it brings you peaceful and special moments together with your precious children, i have written the words below. In every moment, light or dark - in tears or in laughter - they are loved!
Lots of love x Sarah
AS YOU UNFOLD - S. Humphreys
You could sleep all your life i swear i wouldn't mind I will send you the angels and love i can summon And we'll watch you as you unfold
When there is suffering near you Hold onto my hand i will hear you Cry through the night or smile at the lights Whatever you do i will love you Whatever you do i will love you
Such a life i have had full of colourful dreams You're the most beautiful one that i've ever seen And we'll watch you as you unfold
When there is suffering near you Hold onto my hand i will hear you Cry through the night or smile at the lights Whatever you do i will love you Whatever you do i will love you
Isn't it funny that we've never met We've never noticed the sun as it sets My child and my love, my miracle friend No line in the sand, there is no end There is no end To my love there is no end
When there is suffering near you Hold onto my hand i will hear you Cry through the night or smile at the lights Whatever you do i will love you Whatever you do i will love you Whatever you do i will love you.
