Props to mike d who has figured out a way to pick through the nasty table infested html and de-uglify the myspace layout with clever css:

Hacking A More Tasteful MySpace

The result

I'll try this out too when i get a little more time, prolly after my em411 account goes dead i spose.

Tho: i think theres a difference in the way the 'band' pages are set up.. maybe to do with the mp3 player. The comments column on band pages gets placed horizontally centered at the bottom of the page (it looks much better over on the left, underneath the rest of the left column stuff, the way it gets displayed on non-band pages).

I wonder if/when myspace page markup will be updated to use css properly..

ahah
i think it cannot be updated now, otherwise millions of users would see their layout vanished, considering how many myspace's css editors you can find online... avalaible (and pretty simple) customization is one of the biggest point of strength of myspace...
on the other hand, thinking that myspace code will not be cleaned terrifies me, cos it will end being the biggest site using tables for layout in the net... it will remain one of the biggest places with old and incorrect layout on the net.
one should boycott it, but how can one do that? umami's too has joined today! :)

thanks for the link... and oh! i stole your contact board bgimage ;)

cheers, p.

"thanks for the link... and oh! i stole your contact board bgimage ;)"

you know i made that with my own fair hands, in photoshop, you filthy thief!

also: hi!

im sure there would be a way to 'migrate' to properly marked-up version of myspace pages without messing up everyones pages.. the system could support both style bages for a while, and users could be given 6 months to switch.. meanwhile new users would only have the choice of using the 'good markup' pages..

yep, that's true... but the place is working great just as it is now, why would they bother to improve page layout /design? i know pages would be faster to load, but given that everyone nowadays seems to have broadband, it could not be such a problem... moreover table layouts render in the same way in every known broswer, any version, whilst css design should be carefully tested against every known browser (past and future) to give consistent results...

Here are the main advantages of a theoretical myspace css based redesign:

Faster to load, less data to move for each page reload (which could save a dramatic amount of money for myspace, which they could spend on improving other stuff :) ), More accessible (for people with vision problems using screen readers etc and other non-standard browsers), More easily customisable, better search engine visibility.

Actually: because table-layout based sites are very difficult to use in a screenreader you could argue that myspace currently renders in an unacceptable way in some browsers.. this would be cured with a 'responsible markup' redesign.

These things are already more than enough reason imo, and worth the effort of extra testing (you have to test your layout in each new browser anyway, whether css or table based.. though i agree that currently table based might give more predicatble results in general).

i figured out how to get mike's mast image to work a little better.  increase the height to 105px and then adjust the spacing until you get it to cover up the red "myspace music" bar.  i think the default is 162px--try something around 135...
