JAN Watched “The Secret” and created my very own “Dream Board” full of goals that I put in my room. Seems kind of silly but what do I have to lose?
FEB Nothing happening yet. Still waiting for the “Dream Board” to kick in. Finally a stroke of good luck… Near the end of the month I was invited to Headline my first show at George Washington University in D.C. The host was Tehran, the only ½ black ½ Persian I know. He warmed up the audience and made it easy for me to have a great show. We made a good team however, Kvon and Tehran sounds more like a Hip Hop Group!
MAR Started following Darren Carter, one of my favorite comedians, like a lost puppy to his shows. He agrees to put me through his version of comedy boot camp. Its amazing and I am learning a lot from a comedy great! Near the end of March I performed in a charity event I helped put together. Couldn’t think of a good name but after a few tries, we decide to call it ‘Comics w/out Borders’. Little did I know, some producers from SHOWTIME were in attendance. They gave me their contact info and said we would be “in touch’. How Hollywood!
APR Decided I needed some form of K-von Comedy merchandise to give out after the shows. There’s a lot of negativity in the Middle East, so I made some funny T-shirts for the hot babes that say, “I Purr for Persians”. My thought process was, if girls wear this shirt maybe it’ll be the cool thing to do. To misquote Timberlake, ‘I’m bringing Persian Back!’ My manager has ‘em fo you on www.K-vonComedy.com (pink or black)
MAY Became a regular at the “Ha Ha Comedy Club in N. Hollywood. This is owned by Jack and Tere and is a great place to go up a few times a week to a diverse crowd who will let ya know if your jokes are working or not.
JUN Great thing about comedy is you can travel (That is, if you’re like me and love to travel). In a short time I have now been able to check out Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Northern CA. Thanks Jamie Kennedy for bringing me along!!! The crowds love our shows and we have a good time on the road getting to know each other.
JUL After months of silence the ex-girlfriend from last year tried to come to one of my shows. Found out she would be imposing, so I had her money refunded and she was told by the venue not to attend. Of course she freaked out and tried to sue, get restraining orders, and cause a number of other different problems, blah blah blah. Definitely stressful and a huge setback, but in comparison to the whole year not much of an issue. Had some good friends to support me so it worked out great. She also referenced last years “Year in Review” in her grievances towards me. But if you’ll look closely I don’t use her name and no one knows who she is so it doesn’t really matter. Therefore I might share with her that if you don’t like it…QUIT READING MY BLOGS!
AUG Was the lead actor in a movie called “The GingerDead Man II”. It was released straight to DVD and you can get a copy through my website www.KvonComedy.com It’s not exactly “The Matrix” but it came out very funny and was my debut as a leading man so chill out! Of course, one day this will be used to blackmail me on “The Tonight Show”, and although I will act embarrassed, in reality I’m fine with that (shhhh, our little secret). Also did my 1st national commercial for "Absolute Poker" that airs on ESPN quite a bit. I'm wearing a big card suit and I'm the "King of Hearts" so it's funny and you can't miss it.
SEP Filmed a show with Russell Peters and the hilarious Sebastian for SHOWTIME. It aired in September and the whole comedy series was titled “Comics w/out Borders”. I knew that was going to be a great name for a show… The appearance opened some great doors.
OCT One of the coolest comedy shows in town is called Comedy Juice. The crowds are packed, young, and rockin. I use to watch these shows and thanks to Darren Carter they asked me to do a short guest set. It went really well and they invited me back as a regular addition to the lineup!!! They also opened a New Laugh Factory in Long Beach, which is the biggest most upscale comedy club I have ever seen. Seats over 800 people and feels like a comedy cathedral. Comedians across the nation, if you get a chance you have to check out this venue! The icing on the October cake was when Jamie Kennedy and I were invited to perform at the Grand Sierra… the biggest casino in Northern Nevada. I was able to come back to Reno (my College town & where I was born) and have a killer set in front of friends and family!
NOV Gaining some momentum. Did a few newspaper/magazine articles. I was invited back to Reno again but this time for an awesome week of shows at the Silver Legacy. Also was able to work with comedy killer ‘Shang’ who teaches the value of connecting with the audience, hitting ‘em hard, not letting up, and bringing swagger to the stage. We hit up Las Vegas and El Paso together… This guy rocks the house! Headlined a couple small shows, which is a great opportunity. When you first start comedy, they let you have 3 to 5 minutes on stage and you beg and stress out for those spots. Now, being able to perform for 15, 25, and 45 minutes regularly is a great privilege.
DEC Xmas time! 3 cool things... 1. Got a new Website up and running www.K-VONComedy.com 2. Performed for the 1st time on the Las Vegas strip with Maz Jobrani at the Mandalay Bay. 3. Took a weeklong break from telling jokes and hung out with friends and family during the holidays for the first time in a few years.
Thank you to all the people that helped make this happen all year (Comics, Colleges Kids, Babes, Hybrids, and my Persians). It’s New Years Eve now and instead of getting drunk, I’m writing this and another list of things I want to do in ’09.
Oh, and thank you 'Dream Board', everyone needs to make one in with me in '09!!! Are you in???
